Engine knock

My 01 ranger 4.0 SOHC has an engine knock at around 2500-3000 rpms any suggestions?

Are you sure it's not the notorious timming chain slapping around in there? Ford didn't fix it untill the 03 model year. Ford has a repair kit for it, but I believe it involves pulling the motor to get to the rear tensionor to replace it. The motor has a timming chain on the front and rear and the tensionor's are weak and fail.

It sounds to me like A knock when the engine is under a load

It has an automatic trans it doesn't do it in first gear
