How do it know the miles?? This "Key" that you insert. it's the Government credit Card right or is it actually a key and if so where do you fill up at that has pumps that accept keys? Maybe I just don't understand what your saying Joe.
Help an old man out, these new pumps don't have that glass bowl on top any more
the pumps are on base only, i am not allowed to fill up on the public roads. i have a government credit card for when i go TDY on assignment but that pays for all my other expenses.
If we do use less fuel and loose the road taxes per gallon...where is the money for road construction and maintenance going to come from? Alternative fuel transportation needs roads too. I'll bet you see a shift in taxes to the weight of the vehicle or higher even higher taxes per gallon before you see a new tax-per-mile. It's a lot easier to enact and police. It will push many of us to drive lighter vehicles with a tax break going to those powered by alternative fuels.
BTW: We pay less taxes per gallon than most countries.
I think I'd move to Canada too. Oh wait, I'm already here! Our current government is pretty good, but the last 12 years were really rough. Anyway, it's coming one way or another. You guys said it. There's easier ways. Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but most likely it will come under international environmental edicts. Just sayin...
It will never fly..... The cost associated with putting GPS on EVERY car would be so astronomical, not to mention the cost to track every single car. Plus the overload on Satallites and Computers, it would just be too much information. There are alot easier and less expensive ways to cut fuel consumption.
Responding to this and the other previous post:
Yes, Oregon pitched the idea and even ran a pilot program.
The extra cost would be born by the customer. Their plan was to increase the per gallon tax quite a bit. Your option was to either pay the much higher per gallon tax... or put the GPS in.
If you put the GPS in, then the GPS unit would record the miles driven in Oregon between fill ups. When you pulled into a gas station, a wireless link would tell the pump how many miles you'd driven since lass fill up. Then the mile tax would be added to the sale price. The whole point of using GPS vs. just the odometer is that they won't be charging for out of state miles.
" Plus the overload on Satallites" The satellites only transmit the GPS position, there is no receiving of information. So no change for them.
So who would I call when I get a bill for driving 1000 miles per day when the truck has had the wheels off it in the shop for months? Every electronic system goes berserk once in a while.

Or the guy who got a $20,000 plus bill from AT&T for watching a football game on internet air time? He was on a cruise ship, at port, and AT&T charged him international rates.
