egr cooler replacement

I'll be replacing the egr and oil coolers on my '03 soon. I was curious if I will need any special wrenches or torx drivers to do this. I'd hate to tear things down only to find I don't have the proper tools to finish the job, my truck is my only tansportation. Thanks for any info.

before you spend the money on a new egr cooler i would delete it all together. you can get the delete kit cheaper than a cooler.as far as tools needed i dont think you need anything to special. a good selection of metric tools should get it done, maybe wyatt can chime in here.

I second the deletion. I have 112K on my '03 6.0L, everything is working well, never had an issue with anything.

However, if I develop a problem with the cooler, I'm going to delete it. Do a search on this site, you'll find a few different ways to delete it.

Why do you think you'll be replacing your cooler soon?

you should have the oil cooler checked, it may be fine unless it's leaking oil into the water.

Thanks for the replies. The egr cooler is leaking - reason for replacement. I have new egr and oil coolers already and have ordered a coolant filter from Dieselsite. Have considered selling the egr cooler on Ebay and getting a delete kit but at the very least I'll block it off. Trying to do it right the first time and maybe not again. I have 125,000 miles on this truck with a new turbo at 90,000 and no other problems till now.

Just curious. How much have you spent on the parts so far?

Paid $400.00 for the oil and egr coolers as a pagkage deal on Ebay. The coolant filter was another $175 with extra filters and shipping. Have'nt yet decided if I'm gonna block off the egr cooler or delete all together.

If you are planning on keeping your truck, Delete the Cooler completely. If you have emissions then block off the input and the out put leaving the EGR valve in place. I hear that is is easy to do by welding in Freeze plugs in both ends of the cooler.

Correct me if i am wrong but i thought that if you had the latest flash and the PCM not see a flow in the egr system using different sensors then it would go into an "EPA Limp mode" a set fuel table witch lowers performance and lock the vct turbo in one position????????????

Just my experience...

I have my EGR unplugged on my stock truck and it runs tons better. I also have the latest flash (got it done Feb 2009). If this is a limp mode then WOO HOO. Pulls strong. So if my VGT is locked in one place then I won't have to worry about them sticking? Again...WOO HOO!

This may be true, my Truck came from Idaho (no emission sensor). If your Truck came from California it may have the sensor. I have un-plugged my EGR and no codes or lights (not even EPA Limp Mode). If the EGR is un-plugged with the emission low flow sensor it will throw a CEL light. Try un-plugging the EGR, no light then good to go. If CEL light comes on, you will need the SCT programmer to turn off the EGR. I reccomend leaving the EGR plugged in just in case, even after the EGR cooler is blocked or delited.
The FORD dealer reccomend to me not to go with the latest flash, ONLY if you are having COLD start issues.

I will have to look for the post but i thought a ford tech. wrote that the new flash (the one after the buzz flash) montered the intake air flow when the egr opened to make sure their was an egr flow???, i have unplugged my egr with no cel, i guess that only happend on cal. emissions trucks. I am only trying to figure out who or what is right because i noticed i was low on coolant, Not sure if it is from changing the coolant filter but i will keep an eye on it. I am just trying to get the right info because if i have to change the egr cooler than i will delete the egr system if it will not affect the performance of the truck.

Here is a part of the other post i read the info from:

If the MAF does not see a change in flow when the EGR is open it will assume something is wrong and use a different fuel table decreasing millage and performance. On the 02-04 this will not set a CEL but you are still using a "EPA Mode" The 05+ trucks have a different ECM that will set a CEL. This is a federal regulation to insure that the NOx reduction system is working. IF the system is not working then the software reduces max combustion temps to reduce NOx. SCT at this time cannot access the "EPA Mode" tables. They can turn off the CEL but not the table jump.

This effects all US diesel light duty motors, not just ford.

Point of interest!! Do you remember about 18 months ago we had a recall for a new ECM code and if you did not get the code in some states you could not license your truck?? Well that was when we got the EGR code.

I am in the process of researching work arounds but at this time I am hiting a brick wall.

Not to be argumentative but...

Where is this documented by Ford? I have the latest flash (done in Feb 2009) and I unplugged my EGR because of very slight chugging and surging on highway hills. My truck pulls stronger and gets better mileage unplugged. How is this possible? When I say pulls stronger, I mean noticeably stronger. On hills that always make it downshift with EGR plugged in now it doesn't downshift.

Again, not being argumentative but no one has shown proof of this from Ford yet. Where are some Ford techs? Weigh in here!

Same here not trying to be argumentative about the issure just trying to figure out what is true and what is fiction or judgemental. Wondering what the next move is. would love to delete the egr to help the motor but not sure, hate to spend the money and time to delete the egr then find out i have to undo it to gain full pcm operation back??? I guess i am confused on witch route to take. Hopefully a ford tech. will chime in and clarify the issue. Thanks for everyone`s input, again not trying to be argumental about the issue at hand just trying to sort out what is really going on with the 6.0
