I'm planning to drop a Pendaliner in (under-the-rail). The bed is in good shape, w/ some scratches and dull paint here and there. There are a couple of small spots with some minor surface rust. I was going to use a block and sand these down really well and shoot some primer on them. I've never done any bodywork/paint before. This chore seems pretty straightforward, but I thought I'd ask in case there is something I am overlooking.
Also, the previous owner had a toolbox. The front rail has a thin line of surface rust on it, just before it goes underneath the lip, from where I presume the box rubbed against it. I was thinking about sanding the rust out, priming and painting with a rattle can. Since there are several spots where the paint is chipped but primer is still intact, I'm guessing that I would have to pretty much remove all the paint from the face to get a good-looking result. I was thinking about using a Dremel tool to grind everything down, but I think it would take forever. What would be the best way to go about this project? Is it possible to get a good-looking result with a shaker can? Thanks.
I used a shaker can under the rear window cus the guy had a tonneu cover that was rolled up and rubbed off some paint there, it made it look 10 times better but still noticeable difference in texture, and alittle in color on bad areas, where no original paint is left. But overall not bad, have box there so u can't see now anyway. Also, don't go too overboard prepping, it's fairly easy i just did it on my truck, sand the whole bed, clean with grease and wax remover and roll/spray the stuff on, primer is not needed.
