First-off, this is my first post. I am new to this stuff, so please try to bear with me. I have read a ton of info on this site, and you all have helped me get this truck able to start like it should. Now here is where the new problem starts... The truck is a 93 2wd non-turbo(for now!) with the dreaded e4od. It has become a pain. Shifting occasionally or not at all, no overdrive... or it works perfect. I know from other cars I've owned or built that it has to be an electronic issue. I have already changed the tach sensor ,flps, (set accordingly), cleared the codes and thought I had it fixed. Did great for a 150 miles of city-ish driving, then BAM! It started with it's attitude again. This is my only vehicle, and in construction a bike won't cut it (but it may have to!) Please, I beg of you, I need help. I want to put in a 5 speed, and ditch the electronics all-together. Can't do a C6 'cause I drive an average of 180 miles a day and need an overdrive. Am I missing something? Hopefully an inexpensive something.
The easiest and simplest thing to do is to check every last blasted connection relating to the transmission electrical. I would even disconnect the main connector for the PCM while you're at it.
Unplug each connector and inspect/clean them the best you can. Then grease the living crap out of them before reconnecting with a good electrical grease.
Connectors that I am aware of:
1 on the driver' side of the transmission, range sensor (black case mounted at the shifter on the side of the transmission).
1 at the differential speed sensor,
1 on the passenger side of the transmission (this one is very common to cause problems because crud from the road collects on it)
3 under the hood on the driver side of the engine bay
1 at the PCM (driver side firewall below the brake booster I think)
Its up to you how much of this you want to do, but you have the info if you want to use it and it doesn't cost much more than your time.
Info is the best tool available, I'll check them all out in daylight tomorrow. This truck came from a real abuser, and i've been cleaning up as I go. It makes sense that any of those could be a problem, crusty stuff sure won't help. Thanks!
I have a 1994 f250 7.3, e4od tranny, its slow to engage into forward or reverse and even worse going from one to the other, it also really hunts for a gear when doing a rolling turn from one street to another and when i say hunting i mean it goes into a neutral state and rpms just go up, I don't want to get another rebuild if possible, any ideas or places to check?

Haven't heard of this one before. Off the top of my head I would guess the line pressure is too low. Possibly a blocked cooler?
started a few months ago, puzzled me as well- possibilities i looked at were, striped splines on the trans pump(low pressure), clogged trans filter, or internal problem in the valve body, i was hoping that someone else may have encountered this problem and hopefully would say its a quick easy fix haha and maybe it is but the trans cooler could be blocked- it is very small
Well, I cleaned all the connections like I was told. It now has 400 miles trouble free. The connector on the pass side of the trans was horribly nasty with dirt and oil! I think that was the culprit, but we'll see in another couple hundred miles. Glad it doesn't seem to be the computer. thanks all, I'll check back in and let you know.
fordfarmin , you most likley have a bad filter seal allowing it to ingest air into the pump
easy way to verify it is to check teh fluid level
with the fluid reading on the full mark overfill it with two additional quarts
this will bring the fluid level above the filter seal
if the problem disappears then you need to replace the filter
quesenberry , your 93 has malfunction indicator lamp capability
that means if there is an electronic problem such as at the solenoid body connector
there will be a flashing o/d light
the shift hunting you describe or no shifting is usually the result of a transmission range sensor problem
that sensor is analog so as long as the voltage return signal is within its operating parameter the processor will not flash the light or set a code
if your problem returns replace it
Well, @ 600 miles and still shifting OK. Is the "range sensor" the one on the driver side adjacent to the shift lever arm? If the problem comes back I'll have to try that, it shouldn't be too expensive.
1100 miles and it happened again. I'd just done minor league airflow mods and replaced a tie rod end, all happy and she lit me up! Ever have one those trucks with attitude? I have the range sensor on order, and will pick it up tomorrow after work. Damn electronics!
