Has anyone converted their drums to disc? I know you can swap in a new rear from a newer f150 but then you run into the problem with the front not matching the rear.... Anyone know if the E-series vans had rear disc and if that wound be for the most part a direct swap. Obviously it wont be 100%... I think the mustang rear end is to narrow to even think of.
I'm considering this because I currently need new shoes, drums, axel seals, might as well replace bearings while in their and fluid.... If I'm going to go through all of that might as well upgrade if I can!
If you look in Bossind's album you can see a few details of how its done as well as the info he provides.
Last year I salvaged all the parts (a 98 expy, I think) needed to do the coversion for about $75. (I've got the pics, but haven't created an album) Unfortunately I haven't had the time and additional factors to do the conversion. I'm going to shoot for sometime in the next couple of months.
Rear disks from and explorer are a bolt-on, but you need a custom parking brake cable and possibly a different master cylinder.
What year Explorer are we looking at for this? I agree with Stealth, the bolt pattern would be different, so isn't that a problem? I'd like to do this conversion too if possible.
My bad.. I forgot that the rotor slides on over the drive axle. As stated in one of the links above that's relatively easy to overcome by re-drilling the rotors for the larger pattern. The key part is the backer plate which holds the caliper, this bolts to the axle tube the same way on both vehicles(they're both 8.8 axles even though the Explorer version is narrower), so you simply remove all the drum brake components from the pickup and install the disk brake parts.
I believe you need to find a '96 or newer Explorer/Mountaineer with either the 4.0 V6 or 5.0 V8 to get rear disks.
the disc brake conversion thing is asked about every month.
might help if you do an advanced search on the subject for more information.
Same can be said for just about every topic that pops up on this forums. The fact is that I have yet to see it come up on here since I have joined. Not saying that it hasn't but I have yet to see it.
Everyone also knows the search function leaves a lot to be desired... i mean come on what does a whining power steering pump, exhaust, ect, ect,ect... have to do with rear disc? Yes, that did come up when i searched earlier. I also wouldn't of thought to look at the FSB section either. Maybe the terms "rear disc brakes" is to broad of a search but I wouldn't think so.
use 'advanced search' not regular search, limit it to 'xxxxx forum' and put in the name you want in this case this forum, hit 'disk brake' and you will be rewarded.

hope this helps you and anyone else who just can't master the search function.
Its not that I can't figure out how to use the search feature because I did the exact same thing earlier but it just comes down to term.... try that with the terms I used and you will yeild completely different results and majority of them not being relevant to what you searched for. The terms rear disk brake should yield a narrower list of results but in this case it does not.
