I want to take the honeycomb grill insert out of my 2001 screw and paint it, its really faded from the sun. How do I remove it? I would like to replace it with a billet grill but im kinda low on dough right now.
Thanks
I "attempted" to remove my grill insert on my 97,and it quickly became more than I wanted to do....Taped off all the surrounding chrome, and Ford Logo...shot it with some gloss black, let it dry,and removed the tape....Looks great, and nothing had to be removed.....just a thought

That would be my suggestion as well, just tape and paint it. It's been a while since I replaced the center insert with a billet insert so I don't remember the steps exactly, but I think you have to cut/break little tabs that hold it in place.
you can also get a billet grill that just mounts over the top of the existing honeycomb, they are a lot less expensive (about $60) than the full replacement billet grill and only takes about 5 minutes to mount.
I would have to say that getting a grill insert to fit over your honeycomb grill would be the better choice, I just got a new stainless grill for my F-150.. bolted on in 20min...just cuz it was -10 when i did it! you have lots and lots of options for styles and even some colours if you get a certain type. I would say go to stylintrucks.com for some great choice or to see what you like.. it also askes you if your grill is the honeyC style or the other one to get that much closer to a perfect fit. Cheers
I masked and painted mine 3 years ago, use a paint for plastic. took about an hour and a half. after a very rough winter it is starting to chip off so as soon as the weather gets better I'll do it again. I like the blacked out look.
I taped it off and painted it with some plastic paint gloss black yesterday, it looks great blacked out. I guess ill replace it if it starts chipping off.
The grill insert can be removed without breaking any tabs, but it does take some time or really long and skinny arms.......
For those with long/skinny arms: take the radiator cover off, get your arms in between the radiator and the back of the grill, then unclip (carefully) the back of the insert and pop it out.
For those with not so long/skinny arms: take off radiator cover, take out headlights, remove side markers, take out the screws behind the lights and take out the entire grill surround. Put the whole thing on a table and then then you can easily release the clips to separate the grill insert.
If you cleaned the plastic really well, scuffed it up a bit with a scouring pad and/or used adhesion promoter, the paint should not flake off.
2 winters and my painted grill is looking great along with my badge which I also blacked out. Use Krylon plastic paint for a long lasting paint job....wouldn't hurt to throw a few layers of clear coat.
