I like the humor here....
My lower ones were trash last spring/summer....with 135000 miles....
I got Moog w/grease fittings....I did the uppers at the same time, just cause I would have everything apart. Did new front brakes and turned rotors also... a two fer.... roll on....
go with the moogs from carquest there the best that i had so far also the longest lasting on my buddys f150 prerunner and i know those things take a beating and far as a press u dont have to have one just a big socket that fits on the out side of the ball joint and a hammer just be sure to mark ur camber shims before u loosen everything so it isnt to bad gettin to the alinment shop
Moog is the best. You can get them and do it once, or get cheapest Advance Autos with a "warranty" and do it again down the road. I prefer do it once.
I would recommend locating a ball joint remover/installer tool makes the job got a lot easier and probably not a bad idea to do outer u joints while you are that far in.
Took me and my friend who is a mechanic about a day but we dont try to move to fast.
Now, I like the kit from Jeff's Bronco Graveyard, except, of course, it says OEM balljoints....I've got under 50K miles on the truck so I can't imagine I need new bearings, and the U-joints were tight when I installed the lift, and those are cheap anyway to replace.
So would I be better off with OEM ball joints, or greasable Moog's? That's pretty much the determining factor in getting the JBG kit or just what I need.....Thanks!!
Definitely always get greasable if you will actually grease them. My neighbor has a 1972 Chevy van with 250Kmi on it and he has always greased all zerks whenever he does an oil change and he has never had to replace anything in his linkage. All of his joints are still nice and tight. I've always wondered though how much he's spent on grease over the years. Either way, it just goes to show you how effective preventative maintenance can be.
If you're not committed enough to grease them then get em sealed.
yeah when get greasable then EVERY time you get er oil changed wash it up good first then grease everything while your under there thats what i do...theres more grease points on 1 big rig then there are on probly 6 of our trucks so i figure thats gotta play into why their joints rarely ever need to be replaced and when they do its cause they are UNDERGREASED
i just replaced this past summer upper and lower joints on both sides and i used the press its a little tricky to use but it makes the job so much easier i have done them without a press using a plumbers torch and a sledge hammer and let me tell you the press is the way to go and i whole heartily agree while its tore apart replace the universals as they probably have never been changed (like mine) mine were trashed and they never made a sound it would really suck to have to tear it all back apart for 3 universal joints that cost me 40 bucks
