Just checked mine to be sure, mine is the older AIC, no digital display, only 4 buttons, pretty simple, push the charge button/set the parking brake and it brings the engine up to 1200 rpms to provide 14.1 volts at the alternator, as more demand is required ie: heater, AC, lights, glow plugs etc.. it will increase the RPM to a maximum of 1800 rpm's to keep the voltage/alternator at maximum out put... The other button is for PTO attachments and is set for 2500 rpms which is right dead center the torque range to provide necessary power to attachments like winches and hydraulics.... The newer AIC's with digital display allow you to set your rpm at any setting you want but they go for more coin on ebay as well..
The higher end AIC's are adjustable... about 1300 is what you want for most things.
AIC's came in some OBS's too, they weren't exclusive to the SD.
