melted wires at trailer plug in.

The plug connected to my trailer has two wires that are melted and the copper is showing through. Tells me there is a high resistance at the plug. Would a bad ground from one of the lights cause this to happen?

what kind of trailer & plug do you have? does the trailer have it`s own battery? usually a fuse should blow before getting the wires that hot, however while walking by my dad`s 5th wheel one time i heard a clicking noise, traced it back to where he throws his 7way connector in the pin-box, it grounded out on the battery charge wire & the relay just kept kicking in & out heating the wire up to where it melted some insulation.

Loose wires/corroded wires/bad grounds can be bad and start the melting process and even fires.. My dad got home for work one day and parked his truck in the garage. Thought he may have left a garage light on. Went back out and smelled smoke. His trailer connection had corroded so badly that it almost caught on fire.
