soo i just got a notice in the mail that i need to get the CPS recall done, soo its going to my ford dealership tomorrow at 8:30...my question is will this be the improved CPS?? like will they put the good one in??
I agree that IF your engine still has the original BLACK unit I'd keep it!! some have gotten the Ford dealers to just give them the new GRAY unit loose as long as they sign off that the recall has been performed, then they put it in the glove box for when/if the BLACK unit fails....
The OEM is black and so was the replacement, until the recall when they switched to the gray "so called improved" one. Look to the right side(left when facing) in the front of your engine, kinda between the water pump and crank pulley. You will see the wiring and connector to the CPS. Held on with one bolt.
where is this located soo i can look later today??? what colors do they have?? black and what else soo i can see which one i got??
If you've never replaced it (and you got a recall letter), then you have the black one.
The CPS is located just above and to the passenger's side of the crank pulley on the front of the engine. It's easier to reach from underneath the truck.
Like the others have said, don't do the recall. The black CPS is known to fail, but works fine up until it completely dies. The grey CPS seems to work only marginally in most trucks, causing rough idle, contribution faults, and lower MPG's in some cases.
soo is the gray one better than the black?? if soo how do they claim its better???
No, the grey one is worse than the black. The problem with the black one is that it will completely fail without warning, stalling the truck.
The grey one has a completely different set of issues. With a perfectly good and functioning grey CPS, your engine can run rougher and throw contribution failure codes left and right (not on all trucks, but a large enough portion of them). Nearly every truck will have higher increases in changing rotational velocity numbers when running a grey CPS vs a black one, even if the engine is perfectly healthy. In some cases, the grey CPS makes your engine act and run like something is wrong with it.
When Ford first released the grey CPS, some people came back to the dealership with an illuminated check engine light. Ford would diagnose contribution faults, mainly on #3 and #8 cylinders. As a result, the dealerships would replace injectors, wiring harnesses, IDM's, PCM's, and more. None of these trucks were under warranty, so the owners were paying for this out of their own pockets, thinking something was wrong with their engine. In reality, it was just the free recall CPS throwing ghost codes. Imagine being one of those owners
where can i find that improved CPS isnt there a blue one or something thats supposed to be alot better ??
It's not an "improved" CPS, but instead it's off the International DT466's. That one has also been updated and is grey in color. Not sure what they changed though.
If you are feeling adventurous call up an International dealer and tell them you need a CMP for a year 2000 ton and a half truck. The IH part is gray now also, but no idea if its the same one Ford is shoving down our throats.
I'm one of the lucky ones who went in for the recall, the tech noticed I had a nearly new black one installed already, handed me the gray one in the bag and said "see ya later dude!"
