I had my truck in the shop recently to get an alignment and a brake job. I could do a brake job...but I'm just too dang busy with work, 4yr old daughter, and 3 week old daughter.
So...while it's there they can't do the alignment because the ball-joints are so bad. This is a shop I trust, and they showed me the ball-joints. They are right...they are VERY bad.
But...they tell me it's about a $600 job to replace all the ball joints. That (to me) sounds a bit excessive.
If they will do the work and provide parts for $600 hand over the money! I took me a few hours and around $200-250 in parts just to do one side. It's not a bad job if you want to tackle it yourself, the daughters can help (mine are always "helping" me )
Just hand them the money! That is a pretty good price. I paid about $850 to have what you are having done. They also had to replace the drag link on the steering so that was another $200. With tax and all, they lightened my wallet like $1,100.
Make sure the ball joints are greasable...no need to have to do this soon again down the road! Kick in a few extra if theyre not and get ones that are!
I also say do it, i just paid 520.00 for one side upper and lower and a axle seal install. Get the greaseable ones like Tristan said, their called Moog ball joints, good luck.
Just did mine yesterday. Shop quoted me $1200, so I decided to do it myself. Used Moog joints. There is a big difference in cost between Moog and 'house' brand joints. I decided I did not want to do this again so I sprung for the expensive name brand joints. I paid nearly $600 just for parts. Bought 4 ball joints from parts house and 2 expensive seals and 2 orings from Ford.
I was quoted about $1100 a few months back so I bought the Moog balljoints, the required axle seals, and a few other small things for about $300 and did it myself. For $600 including an alignment I'd have paid up in a heartbeat!!
Being in Canada it's sort of comparing apples to oranges, but I priced out the parts locally and it came to about $880.00 before taxes. Labor would have run me about $500.
I ordered the parts from powerstrokeshop.com and cut my parts price in half.
For $600 I would have been handing him the $$$ before he could change his mind.
