Took my '99 f150 4x4 to the dealership for an alignment, but they said they couldn't do it because 3 of the ball-joints on the front were bad:-X23 With 40K miles??? The front end is tight and I haven't heard or felt anything out of the ordinary.
Anyone else had this problem?
(They did offer to replace them for $650) I don't think so.
OK. That is kinda what I thought. If the previous tires showed weird wear patterns suggesting need for alignment, that is one thing, but it sounds like you are OK. As for whether it is common for ball joints to go that early on your rig, I suggest you may get a quicker responsein the "97+ F150/E150 forum." If you have a mechanic you trust, have him check it out. Or maybe a knowledgable FTEr knows a tough and dirty way to do a quick check in your garage. As for me, I rarely get alignments and haven't noticed any problems (maybe it is the twin-I-beams?, dunno, wifes 92 Aerostar has not been aligned in its 87,000 miles and it drives fine). I suspect alignments are rarely needed on modern vehicles (well Fords anyway) because of better quality and design (would be an interesting topic--maybe I'll start it).
