My '90 Ranger is a great little truck with 143k on
it. The lone disappointment has been the bizarre
peeling of large pieces of paint from the hood of
the truck. A few weeks ago, on an especially cold morning, I discovered huge flakes ( 2 to 3"
sections) peeling off the hood. Anyone else
encounter such a dilema or know if Ford will offer
help? Faded paint I was prepared for on a 10 yr
old truck, but not peeling. Nearly the entire
hood is now bare. Thank you!
I know this really won't be of much help, but, I've heard of and seen this problem on other ford models, mostly cars, same peeling of chunks of paint. I recall something about them changing the primer or top coat to meet EPA requirements. I don't think ford will help after this amount of time, I think they did repaint some areas of some vehicals, but this was a dealer by dealer thing. Only "good" thing I've seen is they didn't seem to rust to quick, just look really bad. I also do not believe this to be a ford only problem, all 3 had some problems with this and all seem to be models from around this time period. Wish I had some ideas of where/how to help you handle this, start at the dealer and see if they even acknowledge this problem? Hopefully someone else can provide more details or coarse of action for you to take. Good luck, Chuck P.
this issue surfaced in the late 80's as the plants went to a process that eleminated the surface primers. The topcoat was sprayed directly onto the e-coat. UV rays penetrated the topcoat and oxidized the e-coat as it is extremely subseptible to UV rays. Once the returned to the use of surface primers and a base coat/clear coat paint system the problem was solved. If you would have noticed this earlier they would have covered it under warranty. If you chose to repaint the vehicle you must have it stripped completely and an acid etch primer applied before apply any base/clear coat or it will peel again.
