Great info on this site. I've been thinking about swapping out the glow plugs myself. Out of curiosity how long do the glow plugs normally last? Like should they be changed like spark plugs every 50k miles or so? Do the gaskets and harnesses need to be replaced at the same time?
My truck turned 200,000 miles last night. Still has the oem glow plugs, and started all winter with our pennsylvania winter. The first thing to start with is the glow plug relay, for sure.
If you have some patience, some mechanical knowledge, and a little time, the glow plugs arent a terrible thing to replace. You remove both CAC tubes, (which all 4 boots should be cleaned well) and then the valve covers, and your in. Unhook the wires, remove the plugs. Crank the engine over my hand a few revs, then install new, and reverse the process. But I would most certainly start with the stancor GPR from the link to Guzzles site.
why do you have to crank the engine over a few times?

At 98k I had one bad GP. I am sure some still have 8 good GPs at 200k. Best thing to do is ohm them out. I changed all 8 and have 7 good spares. I wanted to remove the VCs anyway to re-torque injector hold downs and rocker bolts as well as install UVCH retainers so changed the GPs while in there. VC gaskets are reusable and so are the harnesses if the pins are not burnt or other wise damaged.

When you replace the glow plugs, theres a good chance some of the residual oil will go into the cylinder. So to remedy that, I hand cranked it over some. You may not have to, but I was happy with the extra insurance. Then I reinstalled the new plugs.

Oil with flow into the cylinder through the glow plug hole. You need to get the oil out of the cylinder so it will not hydro lock. I vacummed the oil out of each cylinder through the GP hole.
