I've read a several of the glow plug & or relay posts. Here's mine.
I just took my truck the the mechanic for the problem in the title & ends up I needed an alternator and batteries before deciding if the glow plugs need replacing. The relays and plug tests checked out fine.
From a cold engine start: If it's over 55 degrees I can start in one cycle. If it's under I have to cycle more than once to start. Once it starts it's very smooth running right off. Does this mean the glow plugs are bad? Is there a link describing replacement? I have the Childress book, but the pics are pretty poor.
I have brand new high end batteries, they spin it pretty fast. As far as my mechanic goes, he did the tests prescribed in the link (it's great to see the detail in that link). All tests point towards the glow plugs being within tolerances, so he saved me money by not taking off the valve covers and checking manually to see if there is pitting, or a more detailed look at the plugs.
Is it possible that pitting or some other problem would not show up through the multi-meter tests prescribed in the link above? Is cycling the plugs more than once when it's in the 40's out common? Does it mean the odds are against the plugs being good, even though electric resistance testing says they are?
if the GP's read good then they are fine, the fact that the mechanic is telling that "the tests point towards the GP's being with in tolerances" makes me question weather he knows what he is doing be because they either are in spec or there not..period. what was the voltage out put on the GPR and how long did it stay energized when he tested it?
I would do it again to verify it. Also it never hurts getting a little dirty learning more of how your truck works. Also can you hear the relay click when you turn on your key?
Is cycling the plugs more than once when it's in the 40's out common? Thanks again.[/QUOTE]
Once is all that is needed. I only have to cycle once, even down to -25. I have a remote starter and it cycles once and has never missed once, no matter how cold it got.
I have seen a GPR that the test said it worked, but the truck still had problems turning over. Changed the relay, and the truck started fine. What we think the problem was when we took the relay apart the contacts were burned so it allowed the voltage thru but not enough amperage. If you recheck your GPR and/or GP make sure the engine is cold. The GPR should show battery voltage on the post with 2 wires when you turn the key on, and the GPs should read .1-2 ohms from the valve cover harness connector.
I have a similar problem, and plugging it in solves the problem, but this is not a cure. Does anybody know how many AMPS the glow plugs should draw? I ohmed out all of the glow plugs, and they were good, and I have voltage across the GPR, but the contacts could be burned and I am not getting all of the AMPS I should. I have a meter I can test this with.
