I was scarred to drill in my roof as well but I followed these instructions exactly and never had any problems. I have about 90,000 miles on my lights. jI just used factory Ford lights.
i believe that pre '08 was always on the passenger side...
08's could be either...mine was on the driver side.
I basically followed motoman's writeup, but changed a few things I didn't like...and made a writeup here about a month and a half ago...don't have time to link right now...
I just did mine last week, Bought them from recon, the kit for trucks that did not have them from the factory, it comes with the wiring harness for the lights and a wire to tap into your parking lights. I did mine in about an hr and a half. I wired them into the back of the headlight switch. Remember, measure twice drill once.
Looks good. I want this to be my next mod, I have the mirrors with the leds in them I think I want to get the recon leds for the cab. I think they would look sweet.
The recon kit comes with a wiring harness that they just throw together and tape up. I didn't want to use that so I bought the factory harness from Ford for $35 and it just plugged in behind the passenger side kick panel and it had all of the retainer clips on it that popped into all of the factory locations so the wires aren't just hanging in there. Only problem with that is that you have to splice the connectors from the wiring harness they give you with the lights onto the ford wiring harness. It was a pretty easy mod. The only tools I had to buy were a knockout tool for the big holes in the roof and I didn't have a big enough Torx bit to remove the seat belts to drop the headliner. Another good tip, silicone everything really good. You only want that headliner down once.
I have done them on my previous SD 01 and current 05 SuperDuty. I measured a few times and tweaked them to exactly where I wanted and marked first, then drilled the holes. Just take your time and it is a pretty nice project to do, very rewarding when completed. My tap in wire was on the passenger side kick panel. I used a set of LED lights that are very close to the original Ford lights in style. The look cool.
