Krosati - nicely done.
A big help to us novices.
Thanks!

Patch panel/Rust repair

Krosati, I believe "Oldfordtrucksrule" was asking if you use a product like 3m Acryl-Blue or such on top of your filler.

Patch panel/Rust repair

The panel I put in was plain steel. No body filler or anything like that. The inside of the cowl was steel brushed and coated with POR-15 before welding. After I finished the repair, I recoated with POR-15 from inside the truck throught the fresh air vent.
For primer I used Krylon I had laying around and was temporary. The entire cab was sandblasted and primed by a local shop for $400 a few months ago.

krosati- nice article. I ahve some stuff I'm fixin to tackle. Also, since there aren't many books out there on the subject, and you do seem to know what you're talking about.... you could write one and make a dollar or two... just a thought.

Well, I'm not too sure I would have the time. But who knows, later after the truck is done, I could try.

I did get some of my work published recently in Classic Trucks Magazine. Check out the thread in GC (moved to Announcments now) https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...hreadid=172537

Nice job. Might I add that you should use an epoxy primer on all metal areas before you spray your filler primer. Icar actually wants you to use a weld through primer, then weld, and treat bare metal with a metal prep or self etching primer, but all that gets expensive, if you coat the bare metal with an epoxy primer like ppg dp-40 you will have a pretty good repair.

WTG on the article Krosati!! You should be very proud man. i think that making patch panels is a dying art. Right up there with Hand PinStriping.

when you gonna get to do the Mustang II front susp. On your truck? Looking forward to seeing that go on.

Actually it's already installed. I did this way before I started the cab repairs. I have a few pics in my gallery but didn't post all of the tech details. I planned to do an article for my website but never made it around to it.

You guys are all way past my abilities but I can add something that helped me a ton when welding sheet metal. My mig, and I'm assuming most others do too, can use several sizes of wire. The smallest wire at .023 got me to where I can do beautiful welds on metal as thin as .035. Butt welds, overlaps, outside corners, you name it.

Before trying that I was blowing holes on anything under .060.

I'm getting ready to patch two 6" x 5" holes in the side of the bed on my 65 F250 that were cut out for access doors to get to gas tank fillers, so this was a great thread to run into. Wish me luck!

I just got a quote for a Lincoln sp 135 110 volt welder for a friend at the local weld shop for $359 flux and gas set up tank and cart extra. This is a great welder for autobody work and some fab work with flux for greater penitration and thicker material. I like the .023 also for the body work. Good luck Ed ke6bnl

I've got the Lincoln SP125. Works great and I'm happy with it. It's my skill that concerns me
