5 speed explorers

I just bought a 96 Explorer Sport 2 door 4x4 it has the 4.0 and a 5 speed trans. I was just wondering if they made a lot of these or are they kinda hard to come by. I going to sell it as soon as i get some things fixed on it, the old lady is totally against a manual lol, now she tells me. O h well Just wondering. Its in really nice shape and runs great.

I have one - same year, exact same set-up. They are not that uncommon but they did sell a bunch more 4-doors.

When I bought my 4-door explorer in '91 I had to convince the local dealer that I wanted manual trans. They had to drive one down here from north of Atlanta (6 hrs away......) if that tells you anything about availability.

I think t may have depended on where you lived. 4WD Explorers were tough to find in some parts of the country I do recall. A manual transmission in a 4-door is rather uncommon but not so much with the 2-door Sport.

If you have one with a manual don't EVER get rid of it. I sold my old 92' 4dr, 4x4, 5sp and bought a 2002 Merc Mountaineer. Biggest mistake ever. At 70,000 miles the auto trans blew up and the dealer tells me this is very common even though I had it serviced every 30,000 miles when the book says 60,000 miles. Plus the new autos don't even have dip sticks and changing the fluids yourself can be a pain and somewhat technical compared to older vehicles. Also have had trouble with the blend motor and rear differential (I do a lot of towing with both the old and new car). My old Explorer had over 200k miles and ran perfect. First clutch made it to 150k and the second was still going strong. I just wish you could get a manual in the new ones.
