so this started a week ago after i went down a street that water went up to the bottom of my door. after that i heard a clicking sound and i thought it was water in my fan or somthin and after i got home it went away.... then it happened 2 other times after mudding and such.. then this morning i was coming back from camping and i was on a dirt trail and it started again, but i didnt go threw water. and it starts off loud and gets quite tell its gone... i got home today and didnt know what to do. so i jiggled some spark plug wires around and such and it started getting quite then went away again....
does anyone have any idea what this sound might be???
or you could have a worn valve tip or bad rocker too but i wouldn't count on it maybe you bent a pushrod or one of the oil holes in the pushrod got clogged
i would definatly pull the valve covers and check your valve lash and make sure it is the same roughly for all of your rocker arms
Does the clicking sound stay constant, or does it change with the engine revs? Is the tick/click quiet, or is it a louder clack?
Here's what I have experienced that make noises that sound like the OP's description:
1. Bad spark plug wire allowing the electricity to arc to some metal point/water puddle on the engine/body.
2. Exhaust leak. Depending on the size of the leak, the louder it gets. Small leak, small tick. Bigger leak bigger tick/click/clack.
3. Low oil. Clicking noises because the hydraulic lifters aren't getting enough oil. Sound/volume depends on how much oil is missing.
4. Hydraulic lifter going bad. Same as above, but less noise.
5. Wrist pin/bushing worn out. (Sounds very much like an exhaust leak. - I recently found out the hard way.)
These are good questions-I was thinking of universal joints and the deep water he went thru before the clicking started. But your questions address the fact that he was able to stop the clicking for a period by moving the plug wire.
(And an exhaust leak can sound like a lifter also--as I found out the hard way).
And the cold water could have cracked the hot exhaust manifolds. But I would suspect that this noise is electrical and that some WD40 and/or dielectric grease in the plug wire caps may correct it.

If moving the spark plug wires around actually did stop the tick/click, I would try changing those first. However, the noise should stay fairly constant if this were the case.
If it were me, I would definitely follow 66Tbird's advice, and check out the valve train.
Does the clicking sound like an electrical snap or a mechanical hit?
no it doesnt sound like a electrical snap and it sounds like its coming from under the valve cover on the passangerside near the back. thats why i kinda got confused that the sound went away when i was messin with the spark plugs and wires.

Good luck with this, and I hope it doesn't turn out to be an expensive fix.
(This is the same area my 351W's "exhaust leak" was eminating from. A new long block now resides in the engine bay.)
my truck was allmost all the way out of oil i donno how that happend. i checked my oil levle 2 weeks ago and it was fine... and my truck doesnt leak...

Definitely keep a close eye on it. It had to go somewhere. How many miles have you put on it in the last 2 weeks?
If it is not leaking, it's going out the exhaust. You might want to have a leak down test done to see if the rings, and valve-train are okay.
That's really odd to have oil leak out that much in just two weeks, I'd definitely be looking around for leaks on the engine. I do know that Ford actually says that an engine is within spec. if it uses 1qt of oil for every 1000 miles ( that could be 2000 miles, not exactly sure) on these newer engines, at least before the switch to the Mod motors. Not sure of the spec. on the Mod motors.
Did the ticking noise go away after topping off the oil?
