well i got my hunk oh shhh running.. found out from the 70's forum that it was a resistor wire, which i dont need anymore because i changed the coil.. well atleast i think anyways? i dun understand the electrical theory of it but hey, it works!
so i took it for a quick drive for some kfc! yum! for some reason it kept kickin itself out of 4x4? i then got it stuck in the snowbank infront of my house!
so i have a question.. is it possible to unhook the linkage underneath the truck on the transfer case, so that it will STAY in 4x4... all the time! haha but still shift it between high, neutral and low?
I can`t help you there, maybe Ryan, Dave or one of the others in the know will see this soon. If not post in the Offroad and 4x4 forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum63/
What model and year of truck is it??? F150 right???? That really shouldn't be difficult, but the way to do it really depends on the unit. I think.... The easiest way (if it's manually shifted) would be to not shift into 2 high, or put in a block to prevent it from going into 2. If it's electronicall shifted, dash mounted button, then disconnecting the wiring that leads to the solenoid that shifts from 2 to 4 should do it. Not sure if the solenoid is energized when in 2 or 4 though. That would change things. Then you'd have to set up a power supply to keep power to the solenoid while running to maintain 4x4. Not sure if that would be on the same circuit as the auto lock hubs though...... Only realy familiar with the maunual hubs and transfer case.....
Duh, after re-reading your first post, I think your options are much simpler. It's all manual anyway. A block to prevent the shifter from moving into 2 high would be quick, cheap and easy. Isn't there only 1 linkage??? If so, don't unhook that. I'll have to have another look...
It shouldnt ever slip out of 4x4 if you remove the shifting linkage. As it is there is no locking or resisting mechanicism in the linkage the only force that holds it in place is tension between the gears.
Wait I just re read your question and not too sure I quite follow you....
its my 79 f-150 4x4... not sure what transfer case it has but it has just one shifter on the floor, 4 low, 2 low, nuetral , 2 high and 4 high...
right now i can barely get it into 4 low sometimes.. 2 low goes in gear good, and 2 high goes in gear good, but 4 high is hardest to get into, either not at all or it grinds if its in it..
but ya when i drive it in 4 high, the lock light goes out and the truck isnt in 4x4 anymore... IF i can get it back it will knock itself out again after a while...
BUT when im tryin to pull the lever into either 4high or low and my dad can push the linkage from under aswell it will stay in 4x4...
my dad said that there is a way to take the one link out? which is the link that locks it in 4x4.. im not sure if he meant just so i cant shift at all or not it didnt make sence when he explained it?
i dunno i just dont want to get this thing stuck anymore, or try and go through something and have it go outa 4x4 on me...
