Hello everyone. Just signed in today, as I have started a long awaited search, for a 1972 F truck. A friend here in Montana, turned me on to you guys. I bought a new F-100 in 72 right out of college. Now I would like to find another to help me thru my retirement years. I know squat about bodywork so will be looking for a rust free (L.O.L.) body. What should I look for on the body and where? I thank you all for any help and be sure there will be a lot more questions to come.
These trucks rust just about anywhere, kinda depends on what part of the country it comes from. The MAIN parts: front cab mounts, inner fenders(around the hinges), core support(around mounts), bedsides where the seam is. Seen quite a few with roof issues(around front gutter), cowl area above fenders, doors.
Depending on where you buy it, it will be either cheap and nice shape or expensive and nice shape. Seems alot of them running around Wash/Oregon area and still priced within reason and rust free. You mid western'rs out in big sky country will probably find some around your area too that are in decent shape. Us northeasterns, living in the land of salt/rust don't have much to choose from.
well there are a few places for rust, even worse in your area. for the cab the lower 6 inches rusts from the inside out, the cab mounts rust out, and along the drip rail on the roof. also on the bed there is a seam just above the belt line tents to rust as well. those are the most comon places but in Montana it could be anywhere. if you want to look for a rust free (they are out there) you will need to be looking down south. here in So Cal there are many trucks that only have surface rust, and even some with no rust.
WOW! I thank all you for the info. Dan was right. I can see you guys will be a BIG help in my search and work for the truck. Vetteracer92 any luck on finding that truck you had seen? Went down to Wyoming day before yesterday to look at one. Wish I had went fishing like I was going too. L.O.L.. Guess the search is the fun part.
One of our members, fastmover, grew up in Montana with a '70 Highboy which he recently brought out to Ca. where he now lives. I sold him the cab and fenders from my '72 parts truck and helped him swap them out, there was substantial rust in them. Both fenders were rusted through at the bottoms, the inner fenders were rusted through as well. They frequently rust through under the batter box, so look up through the wheel well to check for that.
The cab was rusted through the floorboards as well as the front cab mounts. The bed was virtually untouched, however.

Your results may vary...
that sounds like my truck...battery box, floor bords, and the lower 6 inches of the cab are all bad.
