I am thinking of buying a 2001 F250 4x4, automatic, with the 7.3, however someone ripped the computer out of it. I looked into computers and should be able to get one for about $350. Should I be scared, any thoughts?

P.S. I can get the truck for under $5000.00

Reason: typing too fast for my own good
Mine's an 01 and I love it, it's a 2wd regular cab but it gets a lot of work.
That's a hard one, someone could have taken out the computer because either it ran like crap or didn't run if they are trying to cheat you. But it could be true that the brain was stolen, very odd... Is it at a dismantler?
Welcome to FTE. Any idea why someone ripped the computer out of it? The only thing that might concern me is if they removed the PCM to hide some other issue since you can't test drive it.
Might be a good idea to pick up the PCM and plug it in to the truck to see if it starts before you buy it. If you get it started, make sure it doesn't have a bad case of blowby. Sounds like it MIGHT be a good deal.
There's definitely a possible "SHADY" factor at work here. To steal the computer, you need to get in to the cab... it doesn't take SUPER long to get it, but why just the computer? What's the story you're being told about how it came to be stolen?
I wold go ahead and get a PCM and plug it up to see how the truck runs before purchasing. You can always fsell the PCM and get pretty close to what you have got In it
I would try and see if there is anyone on here that is located close to you. Someone might have a sparepcm and could go check it out with you. That is a really good deal if the truck isn't trashed. Any way to get pics? Do you know any salvage yard folks that might allow you to borrow a pcm?
I agree with every one here BUYER BEWARE. It seems odd that the PCM was stolen. you have to open the hood and disconnect the harness, then go in the cab and disconnect it from there.

I cannot agree more, Jim. Plus the $5000 price tag is almost too good to be true. Not to say that he found the diamond in the rough but if I was a gambling man (and I am) I think the house is holding a better hand.
Thanks for all the responses, I think I missed out on a good deal. While I spent yesterday trying to find a computer for the truck that I could pick up and try, (one that wasn’t 300 miles away or have to wait 3 days for shipping). Somebody else took a computer they had, put it in, and the truck ran great. Sucks for me!

P.S. I’m still in the market for a truck, if anybody knows of something interesting in Wisconsin or Northern Illinois, send me a message - Thanks
