My neighbor baught an '86 f350 4 dr long bed dually with a 460 and a c6 auto, has a brand new factory replacement holley carb and headers. He hauled a couple of cars down south this past week and it over heated 3 times on him 280-290 deg(he says). But he was also trying to run that thing down the highway at 60mph running better that 3000 r's.
The 3rd time of over heating it it started to miss. I checked the oil it had no water in it, some of the spark plugs were loose, pulled, checked and reinstalled, they were black sooty. Plus the exhaust smells weird.
Does anybody have any ideas on the engine missing and running rough?
Sounds to me the truck needs major tuning.Black sooty plugs are an indicator of a improperly tuned engine.Check your ignition componets and engine controls and air cleaner.Your not getting a complete burn of the fuel and you can smell it in the exaust. Also a improperly tuned engin can overheat.
Just because it's a "New" carb doesn't mean it's tuned right...
Are all the emissions intact? (EGR, AIR pumps, etc..)
You said "headers" so I wonder what's going on with all the rest of it?
Is the ignition timing correct?
If he's running without the EGR it could well be detonating especially cruising on the highway if he goes to accelerate.
The AIR system injects oxygen into the exhaust manifolds to help complete combustion before the unburnt hydrocarbons get out of the pipe.
If either of these systems were disabled you would have issues.
The Truck itself likely has 4.10's if turning that RPM @ 60, so it should be able to pull two cars with no problems.
3k+ for hours on end is not an issue with my truck, but it would be if there was too much advance.
He popped open the valve covers today and on the drivers side, one of the push rods is bent and bent meaning alost bent inhalf jamming it in the guide hole. We are going to remove the intake and see what else this did. hopefully thats it. also he got a little frustrated with all the emissions stuff and removed it all today thinking it would help not being there.
As far as the exhaust smelling "weird", it doesnt really smell rich or lean, it smells like it is mixed with somthing
will post further updates, thanks for the info and ill check the timing and the carb
It should also be noted that 460s will run fine without emissions if properly tuned! I ran my 86 that way for 18 months with no issues as far as running well. I dont recommend it, as they do polute the air more without the air pumps and won't pass emissions without them. And I did not notice any appreciable performance advantage by removing the emissions. So there is no advanatage to doing so, except cleaning up all that plumbing makes the engine much nicer in appearance and to work on. My emissions are back to FACTORY now because I have to test still and I don't really want to be a poluter.
Does it have a carb with adequate CFM for a 460 big block. Although a 460 spinning at only 3000 rpm wouldn't need that big of a carb unless your foot is through the floor board all the time because of the load your pulling.
I would focus on the carb after you fix the damage!
Something else is at play here besides emmisions, IMHO. Most likely a blown head gasket.

Reason: clarity

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but to bend that valve it had to come in contact with the piston so I would pull the heads and do a complete inspection. Better to work on in once then do it twice.

valve wasnt bent, the pushrod was, my guess is he was running way past redline, he was trying to run it like it had an overdrive, wich it does not. said if he ran 55 on the highway he would get run over or ran off the road. i towed a 24 travel trailer from michigan to oregon doing 55-60 and i didnt get ran off the road or run over. he is just always in a hurry
