Trailer Wiring

So I have a F-250 with a 4 prong connector on the truck. I am looking to convert it to the new 7 prong, any tips or diagrams. Thanks a lot.

if you want to be lazy or need it fast, you can probably get a plug that converts for you. we had to do that once when we borrowed a friend's older trailer and tried to plug it into the brand new controller on daddy's expedition.

although i'd actually been meaning to ask yall anyways if a brake controller can be a do-it-yourself project. i need one...

ok I opened the pdf file, copied the screen and pasted it into paint and made it a jpeg and then uploaded it to photo bucket and then linked it to here. no problem eh'
"this information is from a plug manufacture"
all of the new plugs I have installed recently have the wire color printed on the back side of the plug where the wire goes in.

You really have no need to convert to a 7 pin. Unless, you are running electric brakes and an auxillary circuit. Mine came factory with a 7 pin. when you buy the connector it should come with a diagram on how to wire it.

It is a do it yourself project, The newer style controllers are all electronic (don't even hook in the brake system) and come with very good instructions.

do brake controllers plug into our trucks and then the signals get transfered to the 7 pin connectors?

The best oner I have ever used or seen, in the past 30 years are these.

Tekonsha

This is the one, that we have always used in our trucks. Never had one to quit working.

Some of our trucks came with the traler brake adapter in the glove box (Below). It plugs into a connector under the dash. You wire it to the Brake controller of your choice. If you don't find the harness in the glove box you can get it at most trailer outlets or here: Trailer hitch, hitches and bike rack (800)298-8924 for $10 + S&H.

You might need to add 2 solenoids in the power distribution box under the hood.

The rear harness can be a plug and play. Most auto part stores carry them. You simply unplug your brake/tail light wire harness under the rear of the truck and plug in the adapter....done!
