I just bought an 06 PSD, 91,000 miles, Love it!!
Yesterday, after sitting 8 hours outside with temps in the low 30'sF. truck started just fine after a long glow plug light, but runs rough with low power (no smoke) until warm about 3 or 4 minutes. Then it runs fine. On first fill up I added 8 oz of white bottle Power Service. Have not changed oil or fuel filter yet.
Just wondering if this is normal for the 6.0. Should I let it warm up at idle for a couple of min? No high idle mod yet.
Yes, give it a few minutes. Especially when the temps are below freezing.
If you want to be on the safe side of things, keep the rpms under 1500 until the water temps start to come up, and then keep them under 2000 until the water temp gets close to full operating temp.
I had the same problem then it got worse I would switch to a 5w40 syn for the winter and run a full dose of hot shot scecret with the oil change the problem sounds like a injector is geting sledge build up on the oil side HHS fixed the problem for me
Change the oil for sure since you just bought it. Going to synthetic oil in cold temps makes a big difference. I just switched to syn last oil change and it's amazing how much better cold starts are...even here in Vegas where the lows are only 30's.
Thanks for the advice guys, was planning on going to 5w 40 rotella ASAP. Did not realize how much of a difference it would make. Should I stay with the syn in the hot summer?
Also read the thread about the Hot Shot and it sounds like it has the blessing of the majority of FTE. How long is too long to sit at Idle (650 rpm).
Thanks,
Mike

I would stay with syn. Its much better on the engine that the conventional stuff IMO.
I dont know how long is too long to idle. I can tell u I reguarly let my truck idle for close to an hour before I leave in the mornings (remote start when I get out of bed) I would say no moe than that for sure that maybe too long I dont know for sure someone will have an answer for you though
not to scare you but, I had a FIMC go out and it all started with a ruff idle after a cold start, once warm it was fine im in a 25-35 degree winters around here.If after you change fluids it still does't get better, go check the batteries, alt and the FICM it might be going out, it took about 3 cold weeks for mine to fail and then it wouldn't start at all cold.low voltage from a bad batteries killed my FICM thats why I say have the Batts and ALt checked too. goof luck
Hey MRCONCDID I had a FICM go out about 3 months ago and it was doing these same symptoms that you guys are talking about. When I got it back with the new FICM it started and ran perfect now about 4k miles later it's starting with similar symptoms I started it this morning and lifted the hood to get a better listen to the motor and noticed that the hood light kept going dim when it started to run rough then it smooths out for a little while and the hood light is bright. It goes back and forth until warmed up a little then it runs perfect it just seems like it could be batteries or alternator or even a short or something. any anwers would be helpful thanks.

I hope you have your egr blocked off!! Letting a egr equiped 6.0 idle that long will gum up you intake really bad...
PICK1967 As for the problem at hand my 04 does the same thing, Its probably just sticking injectors..or maybe FICM... Plug it up=no money spent= problem solved..

Reason: because i can
I don't think these motors are supposed to idled. I was warned about idling my old 7.3 and I never did and had 310,000 good Kms out of it. Doing the same strategy with the 6.0, start it let it run for 15 to 20 sec's and then drive it, keeping the RPMS under 2,000 till it warms up. My understanding is that idling will coke them up. If you do idle them you need to set them to run 1,100 rpm or better I think, otherwise run too cool and coke the diesel.
