Broken hose.

Crawling around under my truck, looking to see what I have gotten myself into I found a broken rubber hose.

It appears to be connected to a brake line "T" junction that is mounted on the drivers side of the rear differential/axle.

The truck seems to run and brake just fine however.

I haven't had a chance to trace where the hose runs to yet.

Its attached with a "crimp" type fitting so I will have to figure out how to reattach the hose once I replace it.

1978 F150 Supercab 400 4x4.

Other than that, forgive me, I haven't had a vehicle I have had to (or was able to) work on in 20 years!

Thanks,
Mike...

Are you sure thats a brake line? It kinda sounds like your differential vent line

It does sound like the diff vent line. Just cut the crimped clamp with a pair of wire cutters, attach a new hose (3/8" fuel line works well) and put a regular hose clamp on it. The other end just goes up to a clip on the inside of the framerail. You can even put a small filter in the top end of the line for added insurance. I use the 99 cent see through filters so I can see if anything gets in it.

I agree, sounds like the vent hose. If you had a leaking brake line you'd know it.

Entirely possible.

The "T" fitting it goes into has metal lines running from it to each of the back brakes.

I will run the other end of the hose to see where it goes. Then I can find out how long of a hose to replace it with. It is likely as old as everything else on this truck.

Yeah he prob'ly would alright, but. ;)

The crazy thing is a T for the brake lines too, besides an axle vent.
And if his front brakes were still working and he's new to the vehicle, he
might not know the rear brakes ain't working. FMC, you know me, I'm
not a safety nut but seems like we need to make sure he understands
what that crazy setup is all about.

It's a brass block that does three things...
1) holds the steel brake lines to the axle.
2) provides a solid support and connection for the flexible brake hose
from the frame to the axle.
3) both a vent for the axle and a solid connection for the axle vent's hose.

Be careful with it. ;)

I used a small hose clamp and 3/8"(?) fuel hose to replace my vent hose.

Fortunately I have another car to drive.

The opening was filled w/ schmootz so I will have to try to clean that out as best I can w/o pushing it all further in.

And yes, it is a "brass block" on the top of the drivers side of the rear axle. The lines are all metal however. From that block all the way into the brakes.

Looks like I have a project when I get home from work tomorrow.

Is the brass block just a junction block, or is there a check valve in it? I'm doing brake lines at the same time as everything else, and was planning on just cleaning the block out with some brake cleaner...

Yeah, just a brass block. :)
All the one-way valves are in the master cylinder.
Pretty clever setup, does everything they needed doing, all in one part.
