i replaced all my gauge lights today and cleaned the connections on the back of the cluster,,i went out about 5 minutes ago to see if they worked,,,i didnt turn the truck on to see but i just turn the lights on via the headlight switch,,then my dad stopped by to take a look at them so i started the truck up and now they dont work with the truck running,,but they still do when it is off,,now the door buzzer comes on everytime i turn on the lights and gets louder if i increase the brightness of the cluster lights,,all my problems with the lighting in this truck started exactley after i put in the steering column,,i believe something within the wiring of the steering column is messing something up because if i put in the old column(which is totally trashed except the wiring)everything works fine,,any ideas? wow that was really long o yeah its an early 77 f150
I seem to remember reading one of your other posts and it telling what year column you installed but I don't remember what you said. I do know that when I installed a 78 or 79 tilt column in my 77 I had to work out the differences in the wiring because the colors are not the same. I spent some time with a meter and my trucks wiring diagram until I got it sorted out.
yeah im getting kind of fed up with the wiring in this thing,,i put in another 77 column but im thinkin bout going and getting the original column and possible using the wiring harness out of it,,is that possible?
Before you do all that work, go back and dismantle the plug at the bottom of the column harness and double/triple check the location of each wire. It is real easy to get screwed up because you are looking at one connector right side up and it's mating connector upside down. Patience is a real virtue when it comes to working on things on these old trucks, especially wiring that some P.O. may have cobbled up just to make it get by. Sometimes when I get frustrated I have to take a day or two away from the project just to get my head back on straight.
it will cost me but frankly i dont know SH*& about the wiring in these trucks,,all i know is the motor,,,kind of,,haha but would swapping out the harness work?
The entire solution Ford used for the dash lights sux. I have had the same issues and made my own bulb holders and completly bypassed that stupid circuit board. The gauges are next!
