I have done some research. The gauge is made by Engineered Products Co. and sells for about $25 (direct mount, gas engine), but a company, Universal Silencer, tells me they make them for GM, that GM has been putting them on their trucks for years, and just go the dealer and pick one up. I called a few Ch**y dealers and they only want about $12 for it, but have to order it (none have ever heard of it before and are suprised to find it in their parts catalog). My co-worker has one that came with his Ch**y pickup, but says the filter has 50,000 miles on it and the gauge still doesn't say to replace it. That is a paper element. Do you think he would change it? No, still waiting, even though he suspects the gauge is no good. Thinking the GM part is junk, I decided the more expensive one may be worth the extra bucks. I called K&N for their recommendation and was told these are made for big diesels, that they really don't work on light trucks, and that I could have a totally plugged airbox before I would get a reading on the gauge. I gave up. Don't want to waste my time and money. Unless someone has one that works, then I may buy that brand. Perhaps GM puts these on their trucks because the owners don't know enough to change their filters periodically (e.g., my co-worker)!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 14-Jan-02 AT 09:05 PM (EST)]Might want to try a construction equipment sales/repair/supply/rental company, I'm thinking one that goes on the engine air filter assm. for a 100-125 cfm compressor might work. Older ones were 140 cid 4 cyl. Ford engines (2.3L). Some of ours had 'em, some didn't. Just a thought off the top of the noggin'. Also Ford V-8 dump trucks, single axle with a 477 cid (I think!) ran these from the factory, granted, larger air cleaner assm. and larger air filter, but don't think they would draw all that much more air plus they ran "snorkels" to the top of the cab to clear the dust kicked up by the tires-more restrictive?
Just got a call back on my research. A company, Filter Supply Company, in Calif. has a Fram Filter Life Gauge, a similar device but calibrated to max 15 inches pressure, which happens to be the max K&N recommends. Still expensive at $27.50.
