Quick ? i have a 79 f-150 that had a 351m in it i was givin a 289, was just wondering if theres a way of bolting it up to the t18 tranny, maybe change bell housings or something along those lines thanks in advance.
thanks
my 69 F100 in the picture is 12.5 of lift and 38.5's. Currently I had to degrade it to daily driver so I took out 3.5" of lift and swapped on some smaller tires
my other truck that I use to haul the camper and tow the Jeep is a 78 F250 with 6" of lift and 33's, and a 460 on propane
nice, my other truck is a 2003 f-350 7.3 with 8" of lift sitting on 38" toyo o/c m/t, daily driver i'm wanting to lift it about 3" and buy a set of 39.5" pitbulls
wow, this looks seriously complicated. the 390 is going to be a pain to get into your truck, and im assuming the 289 isn't the same block as the 351. you coulda saved yourself alot of headache to just build a 400, but, im sure you already knew that. no chance of trading the 289 for a running 351 or doing something a little simpler?
I have built many "FE" motors(usually 428 but same thing as 390) and 460 motors. Although I am a huge fan of the FE it will cost you more to build than the 460. Also if you are going to build an fe build a 428. You might have to do some searching for a block but they have a lot more torque stock than a 390. You can get a lot of power out of an fe but if cost is an issue parts are cheaper and more available for the 460. MY ADVICE TO ALL IS IF YOU ARE SPENDING A LOT ON AN FE MOTOR MAKE SURE THE ENGINE BUILDER IS FAMILIAR WITH THIS STYLE OF MOTOR. THERE ARE A FEW TRICKS WITH THE OILING SYSTEM IN THESE BLOCKS TO DO TO MAKE THEM BETTER(OPENING UP OIL PASSAGES,ETC.). I love this motor and it is an awesome motor when built properly. I'll shut up for now.
well if i knew some one willing to trade and it was not a 351m.
Your 351m can be rebuilt to a 400 with the 400 crank, the bore is the same. There are also aftermarket stroker kits that will get you to 434 cubic inches.

Although I consider myself an FE guy, the 390 will require a different transmission and mounts in your rig. The 460 will bolt up to the transmission in your truck now and would just require mounts and accessory changes. There is no substitute for cubic inches. Good luck with your swap and build.
big block small block stuff is more of a chevy thing really. the 460 and 390 arent by any means interchangeable. i went to throw a 460 in my truck, bought the motor, then looked into what was involved and decided i could have a hot 390 for the price just to get the 460 in there. you would probably opt the other way.
