Exclamation Help Please ! Opinions needed

Alright, I bought a 2005 F-250 LARIAT CC.. With 94,000 Miles on it. I bought it at the local Toyota dealership. Someone probably had traded it in for a Toyota, pretty dumb if you ask me.. but ok... Anyway, i was just wondering about my oil change.... It coming from a Toyota dealership.... They said they serviced it, but i dont know what they did to it.. I really didnt care, i just needed the truck... How could i tell if they changed the oil or not ..? I now have 97,500 miles on it, and i bought it back in Dec. Do you think they would know what oil to put in it? how to change the oil filters? and all of that... I dont know much about a diesel ill ask about that stuff later... But Toyota dont even have diesel mechanics i dont believe... why would they? Should i go have it changed to be safe? Or should i tough it out until i reach 99,000? Any answers would be great, thnx...

Also, How long can a diesel go without an oil change... and how often should i change my fuel filters, air filters, oil filters, etc... Andwhat kind of other "Maintenence" should be performed monthly... Like i said im new at the diesel's.... so plz help...

Well, i dont let my oil change go over 5,000 Miles... Not sure on how long a diesel will hold the bad oil... But i would think they know how to change the oil in a vehicle... I mean, if a Toyota dealership dunno how to change oil, then they should all be fired and the dealsership should shut down... Bad thing about it is... Dealerships are crooks and liers... So.. Take it from the Pro's that it's very possible that they didnt do much at all to your truck... I would have it changed just to be safe... And as far as your filters...

Oil filter - change w/ your oil change is do.
Fuel filter - Change mine about every 10,000
air filter - Can't remember but i keep it very clean...
Its not complicated, you'll learn...

I change oil in my diesel about every 5000 miles if I haven't been doing a bunch of towing. Since you don't really know what they did, or if they used the correct oil, I would go ahead and change it. I also change my fuel filter every other oil change and carry a spare in the truck in case I ever run into a batch of bad fuel somewhere.

Adam, you referred to diesel, so I assume your truck is a diesel. The air filter, I usually change about every few oil changes, but it depends on when it starts to look dirty. I drive mostly on paved roads and don't see a real dusty environment, so it depends on how you use your truck.

go get it changed to be safe...if you really want to do your truck a favor imo put synthetic in it...mine starts without being plugged in easily when its below 30 degrees...just dont let wally world change it unless your watching them they are sloppy and will leave oil all over the place (i thought i was gonna go insane when i saw all the oil on the underside considering my truck doesnt use any oil)

Assume that the Toyota dealers are idiots and change the oil. I agree with patrickke with the synthetic it is worth the extra money.

Adam, first welcome! and congrats on your new truck.
If you've ever done an oil change you can do one on your truck, its very easy. And Yes I would change the oil to be safe.
The oil filter is mounted top side, easy to get to. As far as oil make sure its rated for
diesel use. Ford requires a rating of API service categories CI-4, CI-4SL or DHD-1
if CI-4 is not available. Viscosity grade 10W-30 preffered. These categories will be on the bottles of oil. I use Shell rotallo 10-30 at 5000 miles.
The fuel filters I would also change. Its a little harder but im sure you can handle it.
The real challenge is the frame rail mounted filter, which in my opinion is most important
to change. Search "fuel filter change" for a full explanation on "how to"

Good Luck, enjoy your truck
Howard

You can also go to MOTORCRAFT PARTS FOR FORD, LINCOLN OR MERCURY VEHICLES, go to owners guides and you should be able to pull down a owners manual for some light reading!

The 6.0L uses 15W-40 in normal conditions. 10W-30 is recommended for conditions below 30 degree's. If you're using 10W-30 in warm weather you're using too light of oil. Given that, many people are using 5W-40 synthetic. This should be good in all conditions.

It's also important to note that you should only be using Motocraft, Racor or International oil and fuel filters. Racor makes both the Motocraft and International filters for the 6.0L. dieselfiltersonline.com is a good place to get either the Motocraft or Racor filters at a price far better than the dealer.

Ford recommends that you change the air filter according to the filter minder on the air box. There is no air filter change interval beyond that. The stock Donaldson Power Core air filtering system was designed specifically for the 6.0L and provides the best filtration and air flow available.

Oil should be changed every 7500 miles, or 5000 miles if in severe service. I change mine every 5000. Fuel filters are every 15,000 miles. There are two of them, one is inside the frame rail underneath the passenger side door. There is also a water seperator there that needs to be drained by removing the drain plug with a 5mm hex key. The other is on top of the engine, next to the oil filter. I grease the front axle U-joins every time I change the oil, and the tie rod ends.

You didn't ask about this, but only use Motocraft Premium Gold coolant, mixed 50/50 with distilled water.

My all means, download the owners manual and the diesel suppliment and give them a look over. Also, check out the 2003-2007 6.0L forum.

Mobil 1 synthetic here with those above specs. Highly suggest it. Everyone else has covered the basics on changes, but as chatty as I have been lately I had to add something.
