Angry New Hybrid Cap/Filter combo?

Anyone heard of a Oil filter cap/filter combination unit. My local Carquest used this part on my 6.0L and it caused a oil spill onto my engine from a bad seal (o-ring). They just tossed the OEM cap and put this crap in. I had them clean up the mess and replace the OEM cap and filter. Gotta watch everyone....hmmm. I will be doing my own oil changes from now on with only Motorcraft parts.

Those aftermarket filters are not what you want. They can even cause some significant damage. You did the right thing making them re-install the OEM parts. Most folks on the forum change their own fluids for just this reason.

Most manufacturers have gone to the filter cap combo. Wix has anyway. I'm sure they had some folks mess up the installation and were found liable. Thats my guess.

You need to ONLY use OEM style filters. Racor is the OEM so you can use Ford, International, or Racor filters. Some Fram filters are repackaged Racor's, but recently Fram has either been selling an aftermarket filter (or multiple examples of people swapping products on the shelf at the store - which I kinda doubt). Ford has many documented cases of issues w/ the aftermarket filters - filter bypassing, plastic degrading and plugging IPR screens, etc. Just not worth it to go w/ aftermarket filters.

That cap and filter combo has a picture showing that there are 2 kinds of filter housings on the 6.0, my filter housing is shown as the one not to use the cap and filter combo with, the part in the middle of the housing is different. I was talking to the people I buy my oil from and they showed me the picture showing the differences, I had already bought my filter so when I changed my oil I checked which one I have and it is the bad one according to wix.

Good reasons to use only the motorcraft. (or racor)

By using filters manufactured by Racor you don't have to wonder or guess if you have the correct filter!

Spin on canister filters and cartridge filters are two entirely different animals. When using cartridge filters, you need to forget everything you know about canister filters. Unlike canister filters, cartridge filters are an integral part of the filter housing assembly and are critical to the proper function of the filtration system. Correct dimensions of the cartridge are critcal to ensure all the oil is properly filtered with no bypass as well as ensuring the proper operation of the anti-drainback feature of the housing assembly. There's a reason these aftermarket filter manufacturers are going with the integral cap/cartridge combo. It's because they know their cartridge doesn't have the correct dimensions to fit properly in the filter housing. Hence, they incorporate an integral cap to try to correct the improper fit of their cartridge. As the saying goes, caveat emptor. Stick with Racor manufactered filter cartridges (i.e., Racor, Motorcraft, IH) and you won't have to worry about improper filtration and can sleep easier.

My response to the question.

No reference to my choice of filter. I run Wix, Napa, or Motorcraft.

Thanks for the thought.

After 38 years of working on automobiles, trucks or anything with a engine I should have been more specific in my response.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Does anyone really use Fram filters? LOL

IMO - your response clearly indicated you had experience w/ WIX and other aftermarkets. This is why I posted what I did.

Wix is the brand specifically mentioned in several Ford videos. Their filters have been shown to not fit properly and in certain cases, they have been shown to cause problems. The proper filter is around $17. (not to imply you - but ....) Why anyone would risk issues just to save $20 per year (max) is beyond me, but they do and to each his own.

The frams do have the patents on them, the ones I've found anyway, I hope they don't stop using them because even when I bought a filter at the international garage they sold me one that is the "same" as original, did not have any patents on it so I quickly removed it after I did my oil change that day, I did not know it was wrong until I had the filter still in the truck out to make a comparison. I found the filter I wanted at walmart, Canadian Tire also carries the proper filters in the fram box.

In any case the oil filter with the cap included was the original statement. Not fuel filters. Not personal opinions. Not Motorcraft advertisements. Not about pictures of abused oil filters. Not about cost. Just a cap included with the oil filter. Your opinion about my experience with aftermarket filters (vast) is out of context. You assumed without verification that your opinion was needed. It was not. I'll try in the future to post more carefully as not to confuse or befuddle. Therefore making myself clearer and concise. I agree that saving money on a cheap filter isn't prudent. Nor would I suggest them. I hope this clears up any confusion.
