The 99 cummins at work just dumped straight down. I saw a high hp d/max on the dyno and after a run was smoking from under the motor and the owner stated it was the crankcase vent.

i used one of these Tractor Supply Company - Strainer 3/4 Polypropylene 50M

picture mounted

showing mesh strainer

i have been collecting a decent amount of oil in the trap. maybe an ounce between oil changes. i couldn't stand the fumes even though my original setup vented near the tailpipe. slightest breeze and i could smell them in the cab. i tried running the hose just back to the engine bay, but that sucked even worse. if i turned on the a/c the fumes went directly into the cab, and i figured i'd rather not asphyxiate myself. i may put some scotchbrite inside the mesh. it's hard to tell in the picture, but since it is a strainer for chemicals, the intake is on the left, which actually comes into the trap in the center (inside the screen you see in the picture). the way the bottom screws on, it has a raised place that fits inside the bottom of the screen, thus forcing the fumes through the screen before it can exit the other side.

Nice setup! Just a thought here... could you take the aqua bloc off an old fuel filter and wrap it around the mesh? Or is the mesh too big?

That is beautiful! Nice setup. I am going to try the stainless steel wool pads next.

I re-routed mine yesterday. I just vented to atmosphere about a foot behind the in frame fuel filter. After that I went on a trip (about 400 miles total) and did not smell or notice anything.
The one thing that I was supprised about was the amount of oil standing in the intake tube past the vent. ( about a cap full or so)
The reason I decided to just vent is because I have a 98 12 valve dodge and that is how it is on that truck.

I completed my CCV re-route this past Saturday. I made my own "catch-can" from aluminum, the drawing is included, using #3 steel wool as the media to separate the oil from the vapor. The can is not serviceable but can be drained. I attached the can to the left side - inside frame rail using a 1/2" bolt and a 1" alum spacer to keep it off of the fuel lines. I always like to keep these things inside the frame rails for protection.

I purchased a new factory CCV hose from the dealer for $36 bucks so I could use the new elbows and clamps for that factory look (base part number: -6A603-). I also used 1" hose; its no secrete that the larger the diameter the hose, or cross-sectional area, the slower the velocity for the vapor. This will allow the oil a chance to drop out of the vapor, its also why I used 4" ID alum tubing for the catch can.

The hose to the can from the vavle cover was about 1/2" away from the exhaust manifold so I fastened a heat shield just it case. The only thing I have to do now is install the drain valve and paint the can black.

I decided to add one more photo showing the wire in the top of the can that keeps the steel wool away from the outlet.

Nice looking container!

Anyone know about how many CFM the crankcase puts out?
Anyone tried a coalesing filter for a compressor?

This is not good. You neet to turn that protrusion around so the intake is not directed into the vent.

Beautiful setup. Very nice!!! You should have started your own thread on this one. It sure beats the crap out of mine.

Smiley1,

Believe it or not that's the way the protrusion was/is installed in my '03. I thought it a bit odd myself but it's the only way it goes based on how it was delivered from the factory and how the factory replacement I purchased was configured.

There was a little bit of oil down in the duct before the turbo and you could see where oil has always been getting in.

That is very strange as mine was facing the opposite direction. I would think it would give a better venturi effect that way.

well, I just cut mine off completely to reduce the restriction. There is quite a bit of pressure that builds up in that crankcase so I suppose it does not matter what it looks like in there.

I also noticed that the valve cover on your '04 is different then my '03. I know they moved the ICP sensor onto the left side valve cover for the '04 model year.

The picture shows the correct position for a venturi effect, that's why I just cut mine off and reinstalled it. The TS CCV mod pics posted are the best I have seen from a store bought kit.

Sideshow -- it has been brought up by another member that the max temp rating for that tractor supply canister is rather low (I believe 125 to 150 degrees MAX). Have you noticed any issue associated with that such as warping of the unit or getting soft? Also, did you have to drill into the frame rail to mount it there or where you able to use factory frame holes? What size u-bolt is that for mounting? I have a year 2000 truck so config maybe slightly different. Just concerned about using the canister with possibly higher temps than it is specified for. Look forward to you feedback.
