Adaptors and everything else you need for the GM 700R or Ford AOD. The GM trans is stronger, but figure the cost of a trans with some beef up for your application--$1000 to $2000 or more, depending on who you buy from.
Prices here for both boxes, you just have to look at their list for the GM:
So, after you spend $850 for an adaptor and $2000 for a trans, you are within spitting distance of a Gear Vendor unit to go behind your existing automatic:
There's another way to go that I've been thinking about. In the mid-'80s you could get an F250 Diesel with a C6 behind it which had an overdrive unit on the tailshaft. This unit was NOT a Gear Vendors O/D unit and I believe it was a factory option, not an aftermarket add-on. We have one of these trannies at work, just sitting out in the junk pile. I don't know how plentiful they are, I've only seen one other besides this one (it was on a running truck) but then, I haven't really been looking for them.
My thought was that you could take an FE C6 and swap the tailshaft and housing for the diesel O/D unit (unfortunately, the tailshaft on a C6 can't be changed without dissasembling the whole tranny, so it takes a little auto tranny experience to do it) which would then give you a C6 automatic transmission with an overdrive unit on the back for a lot less than the cost of a Gear Vendors unit (which typically runs a grand or more used).
The internals of the C6 are the same, but the bellhousing pattern cast into the case is different for each series of engine. The FE is unique and shares its pattern with no other family. The diesel pattern is also unique, and even though it's very similar in looks to the 429/460/351M/400 pattern, it actually won't fit (a rather expensive mistake I learned the hard way...!) So no, it won't even come close to bolting up to the FE.
I wouldn't say it was a total loss, John. He's got some ideas to think about anyway.
Me, I'm a first-class scrounge and am always finding things for cheap or free. The idea I put forth could feasibly done very cheaply as well as pretty easily (for me, anyway and I'm sure for others as well) with the right bit of scrounging luck. The only reason I haven't done it already is that I prefer a stick transmission, so instead I scrounged a T19 and a Gear Vendors for my truck.
The Borg Warner T-85N 3 speed OVERDRIVE manual transmission was an option on 1965/72 F100's.
It was available in 1965/67 F100 240/300 I-6's and 352's; 1968/72 F100's with 360's and 390's. Also used in 1963/67 Galaxies with 352's.
20-24 MPG highway is the norm. It's even possible to get more...depending on conditions, driving speeds.

Something to consider:
The AOD is notorious for frying its guts in heavy stop and go traffic.
The constant shifting up/down, in/out of O/D fries the trans, and it doesn't take too long for this to occur, either.
To preserve the trans, STAY OUT of O/D in heavy traffic and install the largest trans cooler you can find.
Heat is the mortal enemy of the AOD, the worst transmission Ford ever made!
Well, I have a big tranny cooler on it right now, it the size of the rad. I live a far way out of town and do a lot of Hiway travel, so a 4th gear would be nice, But out of my price range at the moment, But I know know what I need to save up for it
