Hi everybody. Just got my truck rolling a couple months ago and decided to post some pics and see what everyone thinks. The pics are in my album. The truck's body is all original for now and I need wheels, but those will come soon. Does anyone else have a 67-72 F100 on air? It was a pain in the butt to do, but it is right. Just seeing what you all thought of it!
Wow - so thats the look I could have had, and now have to envy. Problem is I am an old geezer with no shop or time to do this, and there is no place here in my area of WI that speaks the air bag lingo, have to take it to Chicago or Indy.
I ended up going as low as can go without Air, and the first excuse I get to tear it apart and find someone to do this-it's gonna happen!
I am not sure how or why you ended up doing this with twin I beam front, did you decide not to go with IFS for a specific reason? By the time I got done with beams and brakes I ended up spending as much anyway, and didn't get rack & pinion steering.
To me IFS seems to offer some features such as more and easier alignment options, dropped spindles with Ball Joints, and I imagine more spring travel.
But I already have the 3" dropped beams and your stance looks great, so maybe... I also thought to do bags on rear I'd need to go to 4 link, but apparently not. Have you had any issues with rear tires rubbing at the top (against the fender well where it meets the outside of bed)?
Hey, thanks for the good words! I was looking at your truck a couple days ago, pretty neat truck! I actually printed a pic of it and took it into work to show the guys that someone else actually lowered a 67-72 ford! (they are chevy guys). We all agreed your stance and wheel/tire combo was great looking. I'm going to buy Chevy axles and redrill my front rotors to use Chevy truck wheel bolt pattern so I can swap wheels and sell them easily. Did you stick with the ol 5-5.5"? I was going to ask you what you did about the gas tank relocation, but haven't got around to it yet. Tell me about "airbag lingo"! I live in the sticks. Me and a buddy of mine have the only airbagged trucks around. He is my boss's brother. He has a 72 GMC suburban. You may have seen it in StreetTrucks Magazine a couple months ago. It is white/gray two tone with House of Kolor orange, and purple separations.
As for my truck...it will be four linked...sometime. Here's the deal with it: I've been planning for this truck for a couple of years. I wanted the first 67-72 F100 on air on the road. I stumbled upon this truck in SC in November 2002. Truck was straight and solid with mostly original paint. The great thing about this truck is that its on the ground right now, the frame is done and under the hood is done, but the body is totally original. Tiny spot of rust on corner skin of each door, bedside seams are rusting a little, interior is in shambles (but clean), there are dents, dings, and yes, west coast mirrors! HAHA! One is even cracked! Can you believe some people make fun of my mirrors? HA! I was even looking for a longbed when i started the project. Anyway, I'm 21 and in college, and I work at a body shop. I decided not to go with the M2 frontend for 3 main reasons. The first being that I don't like the way the wheels look set-in. Looks too narrow to me, but I"m sure someone will do it and make it look right. Second reason is that although it looks straightforward, as with anything, there are loose ends to tie up that I didn't want to tackle. Third, I was sure that someone else was going to build one of these trucks on air pretty soon, and I knew it would be someone with lots of money to have a shop install a M2 on it, and I wanted to make sure mine was different. I did my homework and my dad, and uncle and I fabricated all the necessary stuff to do the frontend. Did it all in our garages. This is as low as you can go with the beams, theoretically. My engine crossmember stops it from going any lower, and my tires just touch the 90 degree angle on my inner fenders. When I go 18"s, I'm going to go with a slightly shorter tire. About $1000 to lower it, '79 truck discs spindles (cheap), and about $2500 in the airbag setup uninstalled (but it is AirRide Technologies stuff). But again, everything up front is custom fabricated. LOTS of hours. I have to air it all the way up to make hard turns. As for the rear...the setup I have now is just fine how it is. Rides great, no problems. I notched out the little section where the tub meets the bedside just in case. I'm going to use 2 sets of new factory wheel tubs when I redo the bed so it is slightly wider and higher up. My boss helped me c-notch the frame. There are so many little things involved with doing the airbag thing to these trucks. Shortening driveshafts, moving stuff, steering...um..relocations, etc. As far as alignment, the guy doing it laughed at me when i pulled up. But, he adjusted the toe-in, toe-out with it at ride height, and I haven't noticed much tire wear. I really don't care if it does wear them. I only get it out to drive to work on nice days and cruise it a little. I ain't scared to wear a tire or two (but so far it hasn't). I will end up going four link, only because it looks neat and later on I want to build a really radical engine/tranny for it and want to be able to get on it hard-core when I want with no fear.
So in four months, I have what you see! A homebuilt hauler just getting started! Thanks for your comments!
Whoo - yeah you did a lot, not sure I envy so much now, I have no turning issues, and not rubbing anywhere. Yes I did keep the 5 on 5.5 (Billet Specialities has no problem with this). I used a stainless steel tank from fat Fendered Street Rods in Fontana CA they have a standard set up (about 500. though). There is a guy that visits with a bagged 70 something in WA tucking twentys. But I didn't see a 67-72 on air at Super Nats (one very lowered 67 short bed, black primer, tubs, no tail gate, that might've been just not obvious). Good luck with rest of the truck.
I saw the Fat Fendered Street Rods add in Classic Trucks today. Where did you mount your tank at? I'm guessing you mounted it at the very rear section of the frame where the spare used to be. My airvalves and stuff are all right there! Hey, you didn't happen to grab any pics of the flat black 67-72 from the supernats did you? Is it tubbed or what? I'd like to see the 73- tucking 20s. I know of a guy in LA that has a CHOICE green '76 on air and tucking 20s. Very neat truck. I wish I could have made it to the Nats, but my chevy buddies wouldn't go and I didn't figure I'd have much fun down there by myself. Plus I rely on my buddy to trailer my truck down there. Oh well!
Trucks pull trailers, I',m guesing you made a typo. If I can drive mine from Wisc. to TN I'm sure you'd be driving yours. The slammed one I was talking about is a '79.
Wow!! a truck with bags that is not an S-10!!! what a concept!!
but really, the truck is great. If the rest of your plans get carried out half as well as what you have now, the truck will kick ****..
Haha CACWBY, drive my truck to TN! My theory is, why drive it when you can save sooo much pulling it? I have 4:11s, tach 3000-3500rpms at 70-75 on the interstate, and get maybe 10mpg tops downhill. Don't get me wrong, I have no problem driving it 50-100 miles to a cruise, but I'd rather not 300 miles. If it weren't interstate and I had plenty of time, maybe I would, but I doubt it. I wouldn't want anything to happen to it on the way down that would ruin my weekend you know! I took it to the Spring Grand Run in PForge. My buddy bought an '03 2500HD excab and 6 of us piled in and went. Best part...we had the truck on a dang farm-type new gooseneck! HAHA! Btw...Man I love your wheels.
Thanks MUCHTOMYDELIGHT! Yeah, it's no S-10! Thanks for the comments!
Hey Bagged - time to start saving for an AOD! Converting to an AOD was one of my better moves, I can do 70-75 all day at 23-2400 RPM ( and get 10 mpg on flat ground!). The CACWBY loves the interstate, it was mad at me for driving back to WI, it wanted to head west - back to Cali. RE: Trailers: I did build mine with the intention of long cruises, so I'm pleased it does it well, but Truth be told- I am a Klutz with trailers. So I have to drive it.
CACWBY- I think that it is GREAT that you built your truck to drive. That's what it's all about man! I'm not a trailer queen, and never will be! I am planning on converting to AOD, but I found a rebuilt C4 at the last minute when I really needed a tranny, so I put it in. I'd like an AOD with slight shift kit.
Hey very nice truck just what I had in mind for mine..well sorta...My '86 Stepside in my gallery is getting parked for just that reason. I am ordering a new set of beams to drop it 3" in the front and a flip kit for 4 or so in the rear. I dont know how low thats gonna look. If its not low enough I'm gonna add some drop coils. Then repaint it the same color interior mods then I am lookin to put a supercharger on the 302 but I dont know if I should put the money in to that or just beef up the motor with the 2500 or so I will spend on the charger. If anyone has any pics of a lowered 80-86 that would be much help right now.
