Just thought I would share my experiences with both oils.
I switched over my pickup to rotella syn in December and just put Schaeffers 15w40 in my X a couple of weeks ago. This morning was the coldest since the switch in the X. (13 degrees) Went out and started both this morning and honestly couldn't tell the difference. They both started right up without any issue, no moaning, romping or any other nasty sounds.
I will be puting the 15w40 Schaeffers in my pickup when it is due for a change as it is a little cheaper than the Rotella Syn.
i made the switch from 15w40 rotella to 5w40 rotella and it made a big difference for me,much quiter during start up.but i have no experence with the schaeffers.
I'm not really surprised by this. I would think the cold start advantage would be shared by all synthetics.
So how about some more comparisons? Amount of smoke and smell out the CCV? Any other differences you've noticed besides price?
The 15w40 Shaeffers is only a syn blend and not a pure syn as far as I know so I wasnt sure the difference there would be between the two. As far as CCV the amount of smoke seems to be about the same as when I was running rotella 15w40, but the nasty smell is gone.
I've pretty much gotten used to it, but I've been wanting to try the 9000, and now that Rotella is pretty much the same price, might as well "go green".
Marc,
I am just curious. When you stay that it is starting easier, what do you actually mean? Is is firing quicker? Sounds smoother? or Doesn't have the romps? I am just looking for a little more detail. So that i can share this info to more people.

Basically acts just like the rotella syn. Turns over easier and in turn fires quicker and sounds much smoother than rotella 15w40 at the same temp.

Even though Schaeffer's is a 15W-40 it's Cold Flow Pour Point is -38 degrees F. Rotella 5W-40 (CJ-4) synthetic is -36 degrees F. So both should have similar cold starting characteristics. But a used oil analysis should show slightly better wear results with the 7000. Both are good oils for the 7.3L - but if you can get similar or better results on an oil analysis, why not save the extra $5 a gallon and go with Schaeffer's 7000.
I went from Rotella Dyno to Schaeffers 9000 and my truck loves it. I have heard about the nasty smell of the rotella and it makes me appricate the sweet smell of the 9000.
