Hello
Just purchase a 98 ford ranger 4x4 3 liter automatic 6 cylinder. Truck does not go in reverse. Could this be a small problem a backyard mechanic could fix. Also if not were can I purchase a cheap salvaged transmission. I know it is a one yr only. Only spent 500.00 for truck
Ok, I know you have no history on this truck, but in order to keep the transmission used in these trucks going the fluid needs to be replaced every 30,000 miles. Check the fluid level, if it is low, you will have a no reverse problem, and no 1st sometimes, but not always. If the fluid is too old, same story. A flush can restore some life, but i the fluid is worn out, then that is tough. Don't bother with a swap, a rebuilt trans by a locally owned professional shop is the best bet. If in question, check with the BBB. The shop I use in SLC has no complaints from the BBB. They know their stuff and they do it right. Maybe you have a good local shop too. Avoid transmission chains, such as Ammco or Tanner. You can do a little research into upgrading these transmissions. They can be beefed up and there are better bands and clutches, all of these things make the trans stronger.
