I have a '93 Flareside with the good ol' 300 I6 and E4OD. It's new to me but has 105,000 miles. One of the first chores I did after purchasing the truck was to change the tranny fluid and filter, replacing the fluid with Mercon III.
On a recent interstate excursion I noticed that when going up an overpass there's a massive "stumble" as though the tranny is shifting down and then instantly shifting back up. This happened only with the cruise control engaged; turning the cruise off seemed to resolve the problem.
Then the the other day while accelerating rather smartly in second gear the same sort of stumble occurred twice in succession.
Is this typical of the E4OD or am I being forewarned of an impending disaster?
You might want to change the fuel filter immediately if you haven't since you got your truck. The stumble you feel could be the engine lacking torque 'cause of fuel flow problems, which will make any automatic trans. act funny.

i have a '93 f-150, 4x4, xlt with the e4od. it has just over 148,000 miles on it and last month i had to get it rebuilt. it started with the exact same symptoms. the torque converter is what it probably is but i got the whole thing done just to be safe. boy i'm glad i did, the guy showed me what it looked like and it was not pretty.
