Could I take an Explorer 4.6 CID and put a regular intake & carb on it? I just don't know anything about wiring the computer & such for the EFI engine. I've seen lots of pics and you guys make it look & sound pretty simple.
Jaye, I've done that with a SBC engine but I'm not very familiar with doing it on a Ford engine. It seems to me if you could find an intake manifold you could do it. You might want to do some research and see if the cam needs to be changed to run a carb. Other than that it would just be linkage and fuel line to deal with. Any particular reason you don't want to run the EFI?
The earlier engines were all carb-based and then converted to EFI...this made it simpler to convert back to carb. I believe that the 4.6 is a modular motor and has no provision for a distributor and never had a carb manifold manufactured for it. You would be better off learning about EFI and enjoying the fruits of that labor in improved performance and reliability.
I don't have the 4.6 yet I drove my 55 with a 302 to work a couple times last week and noticed oil all over the tranny I looked and couldn't see where it's coming from it could be the engine I have to get it up on a lift to be sure since I lowered it I can't get under it. The engine was rebuilt in 1994 but it doesn't the mileage of a daily drive.
I have a 4.6 SOHC in my 48 truck. I did some research about manifolds and did find that they were available. I don't remember where because I gave up and went to the original setup. I think your biggest problem would be ignition. You would still need a harness and ECM to operate that part. I used the original ECM and ordered a wire harness to operate the engine and transmission.
