i got a new cap and rotor cause they looked pretty nasty, and now it seems to turn over a little beter but still wont start. i checked compression and got between 37-40 psi on each cylinder
You only got between 37 - 40psi on each cylinder!? Are you sure you did the test right? You should be getting well over 100. 150+ for a healthy engine.
Wow, better recheck that compression, make sure the battery is at a full charge, crank it a few times to get the oil pumping 40 psi is really low bud, I hope it was a weak battery not cranking it fast enough to build the compression up. What type of guage are you using? If it stays that low the rings could be shot or the timing may have jumped causing the valves to open too early.
also when you check compression make sure that you turn engine over the same amount for each cylinder. cranking it over at least 4 to 5 times per cylinder usually works fine. good luck
First you need to figure out why it's not turning over very fast or well as you put it.
Load test the battery if it drops below 9.6 volts you have battery or starter problems.
I would suggest you check your battery cables for voltage drop and your starter, do not just visually check them take them off and check them for internal damage.
You can take the starter to any auto parts store and they will bench test it for you. Make them explain why it's bad if they tell you it's bad don't just take their word for it.
And if you're not sure or you don't believe them take it to another auto parts store and have them check it too.
Get the engine turning over correctly before you move onto other ignition problems, remember one thing at a time do it well and then move on.
From one thing to another...How old is the battary ??? If its like 3 years old i would replace it..It could have a short... I have had that problem with them... Your replacing a lot of stuff but if the battary is old its money well spent... Lew
This is kind of out there but I had a 77 F250 that did that at the most unusual times...in traffic, at red lights, right after running perfectly and basically whenever it felt like it.
Does your coil have the slip connector instead of lugs? This connector was just loose enough on mine to break contact. It should be tight and secure when it's in place.
