If I am repairng the uppipes is it necessary to completely remove them from the truck or can I just do it with them still mounted and y collector removed?
I think you mean the donuts. I haven't done this, but when i looked at them when replacing the turbo, I would just take them all the way out. It is CRAMPED back in there and i cant see it possible to get a wrench in there and loosen em up. I think you'd save yourself a lot of headache and busted knuckles just pulling them completely.
and use LOTSSSSSSS and i mean LOTSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS of PB blaster to loosen those things up. My bud broke the head of one of the bolts off the pass. side pipe... needless to say he still has a leaking donut lol

Yes you can replace the donuts by removing the turbo and Y pipe while leaving the up pipes bolted to the manifold. You just about need a 2nd person to guide the socket with a wobble onto the nuts to get things loosened and tightened.
In addition to the PB Blaster, make sure you use anti-sieze when you put things back together to make it easier next time things have to be removed.
Yea I was looking at it and I am going to leave them on and put on the new donuts. I think I may have found my oil leak also but not sure what the deal is. In the back passenger corner in the valley of my motor on the built up wall there is a hole. It is a perfect circle, so I think its supposed to be there but shouldnt ther be some sort of plug?
Well Im a lil more comfy now. I was just looking at the write up Pocket did and the hole is in the third pic so I guess it is supposed to be there. anyone know where it leads to because I know some crud has went down there. Is it just a drain hole for oil leaks?
BTW I actually think its the easier way to leave the uppies on if u r only replacing donuts. I say this b/c the hardest bolt to get is the back one on the passenger side uppie and you have to undo that one to take the up pipes out. After that one the rest arent bad at all.
The hardest thing you will find, about doing the up pipe donuts, is aligning the baby's butt (exh Y) to the back of the turbo. The dowel pin must "fall into place" for it to seal properly. You must have this aligned and together BEFORE you tighten up the up pipe flanges. There isn't a whole lot of room back there with a 4" down pipe. Ask me how I know.
I found it easier to remove the driver's side up pipe from the bottom and then remove the passenger side with the Y attached. I then tackle removing the bolts with the Y in a vise.
I spray the bolts with PB Blaster and give the bolt bosses a few good whacks with hammer, then they seem to come out pretty easy.

Yes, it's just a drain hole for leaks, oil or fuel.
