I just bought a big 97' F350CC with the bigblock 460, it has tons of miles on it..(250k+) But .. i jumped on it do to how clean it is, truck runs great shifts good and is over all in great shape..
My question is, should i let things run there course or should i take the truck in for somesort of overhaul or rebuild before something happens?
At this point i dont have any reason to suspect issues, but miles are miles..
In this case it is true. My 1984 carbed 460 has 264K on it and it isn't smoking or using oil at a faster rate than a quart every oil change (5K to 7K miles) and the mileage remains as always.
Thanks gents... The only noticable area of oil gathering on this truck is in the rear main seal area.. But there is not a "leak" in the sense that there is dripping, but gathering nun the less...
Thanks for the input guys, i welcome more input if anyone wants to share...
at that kind of miles you may want to double-check the timing chain for slop, or just replace the timing set. thats about all id recommend besides basic tune-ups and lube changes. if that chain breaks youre replacing valves and possibly pistons

Thanks for that idea..! ive had to do that to my family toyota(gulp) but it was a job..
I will take the truck in to have that done.. i have a huge trip planned ahead and would like to take the truck.. so.. better safe then sorry..
that is just like the check engine light only for your transmission, it has a code and you need to get a code reader than can check transmission codes and find out what it is.
Don't get all worried, might not be anything serious, get the codes checked, and then you can post up in the forum for your truck to see if someone can help you with that issue. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum28/
