adding interior lighting - where to get power?

Truck is in my signature. I want to add some interior lights. I hate the dark floor and dark rear seat.

I know what I'm going to use for lighting. Adding two lights for the front floor and at least one for the rear floor.

What I don't know is where to tap into a power and control source. Where is there a convenient location to hook into the interior lighting so that my added lights come on when the dome light comes on?

All info is appreciated.

Try tapping in at the fuse panel, should be one marked "dome/ courtesy lamps" or just splice into the harness once you identify the wire to any of the courtesy lights. 12V tester is a big help.

I just added lights to my truck... mounted them under the dash on both drivers and passengers side. Wow what a diference... I got power from the door pins at the kick panel... that way they come on when I open the doors and when I use the h/l dimmer switch... hope that helps

Great idea! I hate fishing around on the floor for some dropped item, in the semi-darkness.

One question, though: where did, or where will, you guys get your lights?

I mean, did you take lights out of a heavily-optioned truck of the same model, or did you buy aftermarket? Or get them from a non-Ford?

If aftermarket, any brand/model recommendations would be appreciated.

I didn't realize that tapping the door pins would allow the lights to still come on with the headlight control switch. That's why I asked here. Do you remember what color the wire was that you tapped?

Thanks for the info, fellas.

don't remember what color the wire was but if you pull the kick panel off you should be able to figure what wire it is by following it back to the pin, think there's two... I didn't know about the wire being hot when the dome light is on either... only found out after I had installed my alarm and didn't have all my interior in yet... including the dome light.... found out then after i couldn't arm my alarm cause it said my doors were open... when it was the dime light that was trigering it... I had left it on

I used some "auxiliary lights from the local Canadian tire store... came with screws and a chrome cover to direct the light at the floor... looks real good

When I said there is two wires I should have said one will be hot all the time and one hot whith the pin out... easy to check with a test light, and you can reach around and push in the pin to make sure it switches properly... and check to make sure its also hot when the h/l switch is on for the dome... your truck is diferent than mine and might be wired differently...

Just an update (yeah, I know, really late in the game) ... I added blue LED strips to the underside of the dash. I ended up tapping the wire from the passenger side door switch. For my '95, it was the Black/Light Blue striped wire. I also wired up two #194 sockets with mounts under both front seats. I used Velcro strips on the mounts to keep them in place on the carpet and to allow me to face them where ever I want to. Currently, all four face rearward with blue LED bulbs to illuminate the rear floor. Works really well. Thanks for all the info, fellas.
