i have been reading alot about little turbo upgrades. is a new impeller worth it, i understand that they are fairly cheap and can change the sound and spool time? also an upgraded wastegate anyone done these mods that could tell me if they are worth it?
The "impeller" you speak of is called a Wicked Wheel or WW. It is the stock wheel from the early 99 and before turbos. Yes, it is worth it if you are having compressor surge. It does whistle a little louder. I deleted my wastegate so Im not familiar with aftermarket wastegates.
I don't think the aftermarket wastegate actuators are worth it. All you have to do normally is tighten it up yours and it will be better if you think your wastegate is opening too soon. You can also pull the line off the actuator to help out, but watch for surge. When I pulled off the red line, I got more boost, but I started surging. This was with a tuned truck with boost levels at 25psi or more. Without a tuner, you'll probably be okay unless you towing, and in that case, even a stock truck can surge. If you get surge when you pull the red line off, put it back on, then get a WW... LOL
I now have a van turbo, which is just a stock turbo with a bigger exhaust housing. That reduces drive pressures which lets you run higher boost levels, lower EGTs, and make more HP. I also have the ATS ported compressor housing on it which keeps that surge from happening.
