I have a 2004 FX4 SCREW with 40,000 miles. I am experiencing a shudder or bump when I moderately accelerate from a stop. I was convinced it was the driveshaft slip-yoke until I read complaints about the torque converter lockup clutch wearing out and causing the shudder. My question is, which one am I experiencing? The truck has done this since I bought it a year ago. I didn't notice it at first. I already have to schedule an appointment to have the rear diff repaired due to "Whine", and I am a bit disappointed with this annoying shudder, or bump.
Does it feel like your hitting the rumble strips on the highway? Also does it do it when you turn left or right when accelerating?? And last do you have Posi in your rear diff? Have them check out TSB 06-4-4 (LIMITED SLIP AXLE CHATTER, SHUDDER, BINDING SENSATION OR VIBRATION DURING LOW SPEED TURNING MANEUVERS. I had the same thing as you had last week and it was all fixed with replacement of clutch packings in the rear end. Have them replace the seals at same time. i did that and it cost me an extra $60 on top of my ford esp deduct. WELL worth it....
Hmm... if that fixes it temporarily then it sounds like the right thing to fix, but it should last a while. How long has the fix been lasting for you?
As for the kind of grease, all the manuals and such say to use Motorcraft PTFE Lubricant. So, I went to my "local" dealer and tried to buy some and they said that they don't use that there, they just go to NAPA and buy any brand of "good" grease
So, since I was in a hurry and the next Ford dealer was another 40 minutes away, I got some Valvoline Durablend. It fixed my "thump" on takeoff and so far its holding up (only about 7 months so far though).
In another thread on here, FTE/PARTS-GUY (Ed) posted the Ford part number of the grease is D2AZ19590A and he probably sells it.

I had the same problem and clutch packs fixed the problem. I've heard that you can add more friction modifier to the lubricant and then drive several figure eights in a parking lot to help the problem (maybe even withoug the modifier).

i had the clutchpack prob...it was under warrenty tho
The TSB states the nickel coating may have worn off of the yoke. In that case, you have to replace the whole driveshaft. The grease lasted maybe a week for me. I used Lucas grease. I would like to try some that is Moly fortified like the durablend though.
Its the "joint" on a driveshaft that allows for compliance of the driveshaft length as your suspension travels. There are splines on one side and an opening with matching splines on the other part. Hard to explain in words I guess, below is the one on my F250. If there's insufficient grease in there then it will feel like a bump or a thump on takeoff... hope this helps.
Edit.. that second pic is how it looked when I removed it, not after I greased it

i have that as well and just thought it was normal. How much does it cost to get that stuff done under that TSB?
I had the same problem (whine when running and shudder at takeoff) at 35K. Ford replaced the ring and pinion, bearings, and clutch pack. I changed the fluid after about a thousand miles or so to get the break in oil out. I used synthetic Valvoline and friction modifier. At 74K it seems to be fine.
