If I could just figure out WHO the several hundred people that you want have the ability to kill ARE I could understand the issue better. I cant see any logic in it.

Ok, I can understand your point here.
There are people that stockpile tons of firearms and ammunition, in some cases more than enough to fight a small war.
Do I claim to know exactly why? Nope, but then again I've never done it. I try to keep an on-hand quantity of rounds to match the arms that I have. All of mine are for target/sport, but the handguns can do double duty in home defense, God forbid that need ever arise.
I can't see there being a need to hold hundreds of thousands of rounds "just in case" in our lifetimes. For now, even if more controls are executed, the firearms business is just too well lobbied and too profitable to be shut down.
EDIT: Iggy, thanks for the heads up. Money has been tight the last year or two, but it might be time to pay my old store a visit. They usually had a good selection without much if any markup.

You are basing your confusion on an idea that just because someone has all of that ammo they are going to use it to kill people. I don't get that.....

Lets see: car jackers, rapists, home invaders, druggies, auto thieves, street thieves, etc. Any one who would attempt bodily harm upon your person or family. Wanting to have the ability to stop or kill someone is far different from wanting to kill someone. I believe given a choice, gun owners would rather run away from such a confrontation than have to shoot someone. In fact, they would do most anything in reason to avoid having to shoot. Now do you see the logic?
"The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes....Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." Thomas Jefferson

Obviously you have never spent a day at the range, or can appreciate how much ammo can be gone thru in a day spent there. With high capacity mags, 250-500 rounds in a day is nothing......20 rounds?... with aftermarket mags, my Beretta 92 holds more than that fully loaded.

I live in a nice area, with a low crime rate,so im not stockpiling ammo in anticipation of armageddon,im stockpiling it in anticipation of huge price increases through taxation or limitations on purchase quantities. Properly stored ammo has a LONG shelf life.ive got a bunch of Egyptian 8mm mauser ammo from mid to late 1950's,ive fired at least 600-800 rounds of it so far, without a single misfire or dud.........

Who has said anything about committing mayhem with our ammo supplies, other than you?
I think that you should consider leaving logic to those who have a firm grasp on reality, and who are capable of understanding logic.
No offense to the responcible gun folks. It just kinda scares me to think that anyone without much trouble can have that much firepower with no records other than a dealer. I guess I better go get the SKS chicom I saw at the pawn shop and some ammo too. Price less than 200bucks and they had about 10 of them like new....
I'm a responsible gun owner and oppose any government regulation of my 2nd amendment right. #1 it's not any of their business & #2 they are fairly inept at most things they regulate. What is shocking (and disturbing) to me is not so much that the government wants my guns but that gun owners and otherwise good citizens thinks the feds have good motives and a little regulation is not a bad thing. Wake Up! Guns without ammo are nothing more than expensive rocks.

Now that would be a bad idea...........and please limit yourself to 20 rounds. If you shoot like you post............
"...There's no such thing as a good gun. There's no such thing as a bad gun. A gun in the hands of a bad man is a very dangerous thing. A gun in the hands of a good person is no danger to anyone except the bad guys... - Charlton Heston"
Guns are the equalizer, they level the playing field. I'm 5 ft 8 - 130 pounds female, if a bad guy broke into my home and I had nothing in my power to defend myself chances are I would be a goner. Now put my Mossberg 30-30 into my hands, which by the way always leaves me bruised after firing off some shots, suddenly I stand a chance.
I can never give enough praise to our founding fathers. Brilliant men who knew that armed citizens stands a chance against a tyrannical government.

Incredible post!
Reps coming your way!
Put a Limbsaver® pad on that .30-30! It'll reduce felt recoil, considerably!
I am not sure which category,if either that our President falls within, but i find it hard to believe that he will be a friend to the lawful gun owner.....
Iggy, his state of Illinois should tell you. I am legal to concealed carry or open in 48 states. I cannot legally carry concealed or open Illinois, but I will admit that when I drive through his glorious state, that little 40 that I carry is within easy reach, like in my damn belt!
