CAT Removal

Okay! I have decided to take out my plugged CAT from my 97 F350 PSD. I have read alot of the other posts about how to unbolt and remove it but wouldnt it be easier to just cut it out just past the CAT on both sides and then replace with pipe? Any thoughts? We dont have emissions here so I just want it gone. Also, what are your thoughts on where to get a good set of guages?

Unbolting the CAT from downpipe is easy, however banging the CAT from rear exhaust pipe is nearly impossible with the age on these trucks. I did it once but never again. IMO chop the CAT out and go from there.

I just cut mine out and then cut a piece of pipe to the right length and held it in with band clamps. I had no problems it at all even with the butt connetion held with band clamps.

I cut my cat out tonight. I cut right on the edge of the cat, not much straight pipe on either side so cut wisely. Took a 12 inch piece of 3.5od pipe and welded 3.5id adapters on either end. Removed cat back exhaust from hangers so that I could slide the exhaust into the new pipe (left in hangers the tailpipe would hit rear tank). Once adapters were over original exhaust on either side used 3.5in clamps to attach everything. Hardest part was removing exhaust from hangers.

Mater78 - what truck do you have? Year etc. For some reason I was thinking mine (97 F350 Crew Cab) has 3" pipe not 3.5". Just wondering.

its 3 1/2" ID. and you might as well take out the muffler too, the sound id awesome, the fuel mileage is awesome and best of all, the chicks dig it. get a piece of pipe and weld it in. i used a mig. absolutlely no regrets.

IMO that's the best option if you live in a state that has emission testing. They may be looking for a cat.
You could even tack weld a piece of straight pipe through it to smooth out the flow.

yes, but what's the point unless you live in an emmission state.
