I just replaced my alternator because the bearings were screaming and it was just as easy to buy another than to have it rebuilt. It's the same 55 amp but now when I come to a stop or idle at night I see a difference in the lights. Just above idle the lights will brighten back up. The alternator is from Napa and has the FoMoCo stamped on the back. Should I have bought a higher amperage one??
125 amp one wire on 78 F150 460 works great , also done headlight harness upgrade and added # 10-4 SO cord to driver side then 3 power distribution blocks on fender 1 msd ign 1 fuel pump 1 spare . what ever you do to these old trucks i have found it better to check and clean all grounds also add a few where the factory should have !!!!!
My truck also dimmed at idle and the lights get brighter when you give it gas. I don't notice it anymore after I rewired the lights to use halogen bulbs. I don't know if that will help you out or not. If they didn't do that before you changed the alternator then maybe double check the pulley again and make sure belt is tight enough.
