Cherry picker, leveler, straps, grinder, dremel....here we go.
Rust on cab mounts, back cab....just like you all said. Figure I'll just take my time, start with one thing and move on. All parts stored in labeled zip lock bags....
Couldn't get anywhere without this site....thanks guys.
That bed is prolly one of the best original styleside beds Ive seen in umpteen years...just get some 240 for the bed floor inside and 320 for the rest and go at it...
As for removing it...I did mine several years ago with a ton of 2x4s and jacks and so on...no cherry picker or extra pair of hands...took the better part of the day...a Labor Day weekend as I recall...but it turned out just fine...and no busted fingers or anything either.
appreciate the advice....im pretty clueless and learning everything from you guys....and i sure appreciate it!
i got mine off solo....how you did it without a picker i do not know....but good work! I'd bet that was interesting and i'm glad you kept your fingers!
after doing this, i sure could see how you could lose 1....
i hooked straps to thru the front square holes, then to the back where they wouldn't slide in. hooked onto the leveler (with all gate and hardware already off and the picker at the back of the bed)....took off picker hook to shorten lift distance- bolted leverler straight to arm.
it pulled the bed into the hydraulics on the lift but if you hook up the back set at the right place and tension - it will hit the hydrualic above the pump lever so you can still pump up the lift....also thru sandbags at back of lift.
it was a little nerve racking....I'd put cardboard anywhere a strap might get cut....and I had 1 strap hook slide out somehow, and shoot by me (opps)....but it held fine the next go around.
the leveler worked great for left to right to pull up slack when the bed leaned over so that i could just pull the truck on out. never had to try to tighten a strap during the process. Thank God.
It was a little nerve racking but it worked.
1 more person would been nice, but then sometimes 2 people throw things off with ideas....
oh yeah, and the bed bolts I actually had to grind some of them from the top....it eventually will turn into a square (as you grind away the round top of the bolt down to where the bolts square shank is)....then use a punch and knock it on down.
the ones on the back of the bed underneath you can't do that (they don't go all the way thru to the top of the bed)....so you proably have to get them from underneath. I did this with a dremel cut off wheel and grinder combo....as the area to fit the grind in was tight (other supports nearby)....cutting off the nut and washer.
Qouted from camperspecial off other thread;
"If the bed is scrap...a torch is faster on the bolts...if its not, be careful in grinding or cutting...a gouge from grinding doesnt look good with new pretty paint... "
-Glad he brought this up, was gonna put a wood floor or do something different on mine....hate to have someone cursing me if they screwed up their bed.
Man my back aches are reminded from this post; "Cherry picker"?, no wonder I don't sleep good at night; I've lifted four bed's off in the last 3 or so years, the old cave man way. (two guys on short bed lift, or three guys on long bed lift); I got to invest in a better solution. Thanks for the detail way of your use with a cherry picker.
As others mention great looking bed; keep us posted on your progress as well.
I've always spray PB Blaster on the bolt threads & nuts prior to removal; usually acouple time's prior to day of lifting off the bed; seems to help lossen the old grime & rust real well.
flip bed....1 strap thru square holes in top front, spare tire low on air on creeper under back bottome, lift strap to the ceiling with cherry picker, run and get neighbor, let picker down about an inch, break loose strap, each guy grab a side and flip over balancing bed on tire (after working creeper out from under tire), lay down sand bags at contact points for soft setting.

I did the same with my bed last summer. I have pics posted in my gallery. Currently have the cab off and painting the front part of the frame. That is a solid looking bed!
Thanks for the pics. I am finishing up my frame. Couple small details (engine/trans) and I'll start focusing on the sheet metal. I'm do a frame swap so I'll probably put the metal on as is. Then pull it back off at a later date and begin fixing it up.
PS, what a crummy bed. I'll take it off your hands for $50, lol.
