66 bed removal tips and tricks

Well the ole 352 is back with a new hair cut...
http://video.tinypic.com/player.php?v=2n65737

Looking forward to getting some "New Paint on the truck" just thought I'd give anyone who has pulled a bed off a chance to enlighten a novice on some heads up details. I'll start archiving productive searches this week. TIA

Good luck!!!!! make sure you have plenty of help. I have swapped my bed three times just make sure you can get the rusty bolts out have a person stand onto to hold the bolts in the hole and just make sure you have all the wires loose before you start to remove it. It is very heavy!!!!

I will be doing the same thing soon I hope. I have all ready spent some time under the truck with knockerloose and some wrenchs and have broke them all loose and put anti seeze on them and re-tightend them. I was thinking of finding a set of old camper jacks to lift it off. I think I have seen them at United Rentals may have to just rent a set.

Just get yourself another big ol redneck and lift the bed off by hand. I have gotten them off by myself before. Slid them off the back and corner walked them over and rested it on the fence.

Ive got the camper jacks as we have an pre Christ himself camper and a few Redneck friends so we should be good. I'm mostly concerned with that item that you find out about after someone on the other side or ?? goes ooops So I take it it is just a # of bolts through the frame/bed bottom and the wiring.... Getting it ready ahead of time is a great idea JD.. just might take my time and do a little each day until it's ready to be removed.

Don't worry bout sissies, the other redneck got's be be bigger and uglier than you.

A long bed has 6 bolts in the bed and 2 at the back, and you unplug the wires. Shouldn't take more than an hour to get it ready to lift.

A regular "cherry picker" can usually be made to work for a one man removal operation. Use bike tie downs at four points or I have even cut a 2X6 to fit under the side rails and picked it up by that after finding the balance point.

Just to add to others reply; 6 bolts thru bed and 2 under neath near back of frame mounts, I removed my tailgate and even the taillights prior too my removal as well, the tailgate is alittle heavy.
just two cents added....

watch yer teeth

In true redneck fashion I tried to wiggle my shortbed, flareside box off by myself in the garage late at night. Got her angled in there and - POP! - the far side slipped off the frame, the near side popped up and almost left me toothless. Ouch, still hurts thinkin' about it.

I highly recommend additional people.... of course, you run the risk of them becoming witnesses to your stupidity.... maybe that's why I do so much of my work alone!

mjunk1, I think you just explained to me why I like to work in the garage by myself.

I have to agree with getting help. I took the bed off of a 66 Chevy by myself. It's do-able, but if I were to do it again, I'd trick a few friends into coming over by having a brew-n-burger cookout. No brews or burgers until AFTER they get the bed off, though. Good luck.

Me and my father lifted the box off of a '66 relatively easily and set it back down on another frame later that day, all in all not too difficult. Should note that neither of us are too big or rednecky and neither struggled too much. one suggestion though, put some stands under the frame and remove the rear wheels. This way you don't have to lift it as high and you don't have to lean over to manuever around the wheels.

I went with the cherry picker and tow staps, lifted slightly, lowered, adjusted for balance and lifted off. One person operation, but must admit that it would have been nice to have a bunch of folks just help lift it off.
